Tony Blair set for Iraq Inquiry hot seat

Read Time:1 Minute, 19 Second

On June 15, 2009, British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, announced that a high level independent panel of scholars and former top level civil servants, would conduct an investigation into British involvement in the invasion of Iraq. Known as The Iraq Inquiry or, The Chilcot Inquiry, named for its chairman Sir John Chilcot, who leads this 5 member group.

They started collecting government papers in August of 2009, and opening statments were in November 2009.

It is not a trial, the panel are not lawyers, oaths will not be taken and witnesses will not have representation. The remit is not to find blame, but to learn lessons. Initially Prime Minister Brown wanted the inquiry to take place behind closed doors (naturally). But there was such an uproar from the opposition and from the country in general, that it was decided to hold it in public and on TV. Tomorrow morning January 29, at 9.30am GMT (4.30am EST), the star witness, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, is appearing to give evidence and answer questions, for SIX HOURS.

It may, or may not be a whitewash, set up to pacify the anger of the population, who feel that the war was unjustified. But it will be nice to see one of the main players in the invasion of Iraq, be stood up in front of the cameras, live on TV, and hopefully, asked a few hard questions. Blair is a very skillful debater and it is possible, that he could lead the panel a merry dance, but I want to see him squirm, just once.

This could have a snowball effect Holte. Under normal circumstances this would be a good thing, but there is a lot going on in America these days.

Blair, unlike Bush, is an extremely brilliant man. And, yes, just like you said, Mike, he’s also a very persuasive one. Hell, he almost convinced me a time or two that the war was justified – ALMOST. I’m very curious to see what happens here.
