Gaddafi Declares ‘Holy War’ on Switzerland

After two centuries of successful neutrality, achieved mainly because it would be really hard to invade because of the many peaks over 10,000 feet, Switzerland found itself threatened by Muammar Gaddafi’s call for a ‘Jihad’ or a ‘Holy War’ against the alpine nation.
The Libyan leader made his comments while speaking at a meeting in Benghazi to mark the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Let us wage jihad against Switzerland, Zionism and foreign aggression,” he said. “Any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against Muhammad, God and the Koran.”
So any Muslims around the world who enjoys a bar of Toblerone or the sweet sounds of a Cuckoo Clock telling him it’s time to hit the prayer mat, will have to switch to Hershey Bars and a less musical timepiece.
Diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Libya have been tense for several years. In 2008, Gadhafi’s son, Hannibal, was arrested in Geneva for allegedly beating up his servants. He was detained briefly and charges were later dropped.
Libya retaliated to Hannibal Gaddafi’s arrest by canceling oil supplies, withdrawing billions of dollars from Swiss banks, refusing visas to Swiss citizens and recalling some of its diplomats.
In the same month that Hannibal Gaddafi was arrested, Libyan authorities detained two Swiss businessmen, in what analysts believe was a retaliatory move.
One was finally allowed to leave the country earlier this week but the second was transferred to jail, where he faces a four-month term on immigration offenses.
Gaddafi called for the ‘Holy War’ because of a recent Swiss referendum that banned the construction of new mosque minarets in the country. He also urged Muslims everywhere to boycott Swiss products and to bar the country’s planes and ships from the airports or seaports of Muslim nations.
The effects of the Swiss minaret ban, plus German and French headscarf bans in public schools, is part of increasing European moves to draw the insular Muslim communities into a more secular European lifestyle. Although Gaddafi has little credibility in the radical Muslim world, there are always some headbangers willing to take the beloved Libyan leader at his word. The Swiss are expert diplomats, they are facing their biggest challenge since World War II.

Switzerland isn’t the true enemy of Libya. It’s time for Qaddhafi to pull out all the stops and declare a Holy War against Luxembourg.
TOM – There are smaller countries that Luxembourg for Gadhafi to pick on before he Holy Wars Switzerland, the tiny Andorra, a little bigger Liechtenstein and the extremely tiny San Marino and Monaco and the minuscule Vatican City.

Arabic has several consonant sounds which have no equivalent in any Western language (and thus no obvious Roman-alphabet letter to represent them), and in many cases sounds are pronounced differently in different dialects of Arabic. The sound at the beginning of “Qaddhafi” is (in standard Arabic) like a sort of K pronounced back in the throat; in some dialects it becomes a G (as in “go”), in others a glottal stop, etc. I never studied Libyan Arabic, but in general the dialects westward of Egypt are hardly intelligible in Arab countries further east. This no doubt accounts for all the variant spellings.
Libya under Qaddhafi’s rule is a strange and dreary place. As with Iran, its people should not be judged by a regime they had little hand in choosing. This article gives a good sense of what it’s like.

G/Q/K is spelled differently at least four times in this forum. How can a guy who has a name no one can spell manage to survive this long. I agree with Stimpson, we can’t bomb him again, but there must be other ways to trim his feathers. I have never, ever trusted this guy, and I’m not about to start now. Sorry I edited the name Holte. I’d read where Gaddafi/Qadafi/Khadaffy had been privatizing sectors of their socialist economy which would almost certainly include oil production.
Maybe this isn’t going so well. Nothing like whipping up religious or populist fervor to distract people from real issues.

I G/Q/K is privatizing his economy that means lots of disposable income for him to play puppet-master and as Gwen pointed out, he has done that for over 40 years, financing all sorts of criminal activity.

Calling for a boycott is perfectly OK; it’s done all the time, by various types for various reasons. The word ‘jihad’, OTOH, shouldn’t be used even if it’s meant metaphorically. (In Gadaffi/Qadafi/Khadaffy’s case, I don’t think it’s intended that way.)
Bombing a country is simply the wrong response, too. Keep cooler heads than that, my friends. Another bombing would probably not even hurt G/Q/K, would almost certainly kill innocents, and would definitely give people another reason to hate America.
STIMPSON – Cooler heads probably will prevail, but if some idiot decides to blow up anything Swiss, fingers will point at Tripoli.
Personally, I put this jerk in the disposable category. BB got it right when he said that president Reagan put in his place with the bombing. He suddenly became a responsible world citizen but that didn’t last. Time for another bombing.

GWEN – Well said, great comment. Libya has a booming oil and gas industry and no doubt it gives Gadhafi courage to shoot his mouth off. Seems like he is itching to get more blood on his hands and he has plenty of that already. He comes across as a clown and is a figure of fun but he really is a despot and should be taken seriously when he threatens Jihad.

Having Dansk (Danish) importer customers for several years, I am keen on the euros they provide and even keener on their customs of business. I really like my Euro & UK customers, they are old world merchants who can drive hard bargins’ but who are true to their word… many American business folk could take a lesson. Just my experience. Having said that,
it should be remembered that circa 67-82 Muamar Kadafi was the DADDY WARBUCKS of terrorism. His oil $ supported and supplied wholesale death across Europe and the Americas for many years. He is vile and unrepentant / lest his funds are in jeopardy. His fiscal role in funding several lethal terror events has kept him persona non grata within the other oil families… but not in the radical Muslim circles. He is a monster. The Scots were terrible wrong to release his countryman over the Lockerbie incident. He outfitted Bader Meinhoff, Japanese Red Army, PFLP, PLO, IRA radicals / assassins, Italian Red Brigade… I mean if he could give millions to Carlos the Jackal (Sanchez) to fund just the “idea” of mass terror…and I don’t think for one minute he has ever truly quit funding radical terror. He is a true monster and international criminal. The only reason he is not brought to complete justice is because of oil. And the Mossad laid off of him because our intelligence community told or threatened them to… because of oil. Singularly the worst element depleting our atmosphere at this moment.
I don’t agree with the isolationism that is growing throughout Europe towards Muslim and their cultures… but still, I abhor the misogynist Muslim credo, cultural practices / beliefs. Yet; this isolationism only serves to further divide basic humanity… bonding / friendship is impossible under a governmental judgment condition… it only breeds more Muslim contempt for our cultures.

Sounds like it’s time for a “buy Swiss” campaign like the “buy Danish” one back when the foaming-at-the-mouth fans of the Pedophile Prophet boycotted them over the cartoons.
Curious how a mere ban on the building of new minarets is grounds for a “holy war”. I don’t recall the Bhuddists declaring holy war on Afghanistan after the Taliban blew up the Bamiyan statues, nor does anyone outside Serbia seem to much care about the 150 or so Serbian Christian monasteries and churches destroyed by Muslims in Kosovo over the last few years.
Qaddhafi muct not be very up on current events, though. The minaret ban passed a couple of months ago.
Osori: The Swiss navy should make short work of those PT boats, if it comes to that:-) Hannibal did get elephants across the Alps, but don’t forget what eventually happened to his home town.
OSO – Switzerland is land-locked but has many snow-fed lakes, so Gadhafi (Qaddafi)(Gaddafi) would have to fly his PT boats in. Hannibal did cross the Alps with his War Elephants scared the Romans to death.

I wouldn’t be too hasty in dismissing Qaddafi. The Libyan military has several PT boats at it’s disposal which could wreak havoc if deployed along Swiss waterways.Assuming Switzerland has waterways ?
Let’s not forget Hannibal got elephants across the Alps, and he was North African too!
