UTAH MORMONS SEEK TO CRIMINALIZE MISCARRIAGES

Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

Utah is the home of the Mormons, and the religions of Mitt Romney and Glenn Beck. The believers have long tried to overturn the states pro-abortion law, enacted of course by Godless heretics, but to date have been unsuccessful. They may, however, have finally found a way to take at least one step in that direction, thus satisfying the will of the Heavenly Father.

A bill passed by the Utah House and Senate this week and waiting for the governor’s signature, will make it a crime for a woman to have a miscarriage, and make induced abortion a crime in some instances.

According Lynn M. Paltrow, executive director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women, what makes Utah’s proposed law unique is that it is specifically designed to be punitive toward pregnant women, not those who might assist or cause an illegal abortion or unintended miscarriage.

The bill passed by legislators amends Utah’s criminal statute to allow the state to charge a woman with criminal homicide for inducing a miscarriage or obtaining an illegal abortion. The basis for the law was a recent case in which a 17-year-old girl, who was seven months pregnant, paid a man $150 to beat her in an attempt to cause a miscarriage. Although the girl gave birth to a baby later given up for adoption, she was initially charged with attempted murder. However the charges were dropped because, at the time, under Utah state law a woman could not be prosecuted for attempting to arrange an abortion, lawful or unlawful.

The bill passed by the Utah legislature would change that. While the bill does not affect legally obtained abortions, it criminalizes any actions taken by women to induce a miscarriage or abortion outside of a doctor’s care, with penalties including up to life in prison.

“This creates a law that makes any pregnant woman who has a miscarriage potentially criminally liable for murder,” says Missy Bird, executive director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Utah. Bird says there are no exemptions in the bill for victims of domestic violence or for those who are substance abusers. The standard is so broad, Bird says, “there nothing in the bill to exempt a woman for not wearing her seatbelt who got into a car accident.

Such a standard could even make falling down stairs a prosecutable event, such as the recent case in Iowa where a pregnant woman who fell down the stairs at her home was arrested under the suspicion she was trying to terminate her pregnancy.

In 2003 an episode of South Park humorously explained the origins and history of Mormonism, but Comedy Central, under pressure from the Mormons, claimed a copyright and forced video sources to remove their embed codes thus effectively shutting down web postings of the show. Regardless, it can still be found, and it is well worth watching not only for its historic accuracy but for its wonderful audacity:

Mike,
I love that South Park episode. They did the same thing with Scientology (the “in the closet” episode). Of course, there is no religion that could stand up to scrutiny. In fact I’m sure the guys at South Park could make Christianity look just as ridiculous as the others. I’m still waiting for that episode.

Subtle, I know, but surely I can find a way to express how I REALLY FEEL ABOUT THIS FUCKING FUCKERY.

That is all.

In Europe they are perfectly content with quiet secularism.

We’ve just about had it with religious nuts. After more than a thousand years of fighting and inter-continental killing in the name of religion, we said, basta! Enough is enough.

That said, we still have religious nuts in our midst — not many but they are there lurking. We just pounce on them the minute we think they’re going overboard.

What the bloody hell.

I just read this and seriously cannot believe it.
You know, if you look at our history, not just in America but the Western hemisphere overall and most of the world, it’s a story of progress (With some big ass massacres and genocide occupying the low points) but again, not to excuse any of it, the predominant trend across the centuries and last decades is always toward more rights, for more people, -not less (this is being interrupted by the fucking predatory global economy but that’s another issue) and then this kind of dark age legislation starts getting proposed.

What the bloody hell.

So, let’s all join the Utah Morons in a GIANT step backward! If you are a woman and have had problems with pregnancy, get the hell out of Utah!

Wonder how many of the jackasses who voted for that little piece of woman-hatred also love the death penalty? Why yes, they do kill already-born humans there.

Yet another example of why religion and government shouldn’t mix. Frigging might as well just move to Saudi Arabia and be done with it.

WILL – Seems like Saudi Arabia is moving here, well to Utah at least.

What? Whoever passed that bill is bordering on insanity.

This simply reinforces my belief that, in the case of religious busybodies, abortion should be made retroactive.

It’s at times like this that I actually appreciate living in England.

We might be fucked up but this?????

Good grief!

Perhaps someone should arrange to kill Little Jimmy Osmond? That might put ’em off a bit…;-)

MR. DINNERS – Fortunately for 99% of Americans, they don’t live in Utah.

So, basically, a Utah woman who gets pregnant would be submitting herself to authoritarian rule. That’s phucked up.

I advise everybody to follow the link to video, it really puts Mormonism on the spot.

Wonder what presidential candidate Romney thinks of the new law, he will no doubt smile and say, everybody has a right to believe what they want. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb Dumb.
