Amazingly, and we never cease to be amazed, some members of the GOP, including John McCain who just laughed at the notion, are saying that the death threats directed at members of the house simply go with the territory. They claim that faxes showing nooses, and phone calls threatening the lives of Democrat house members who supported health care reform are to be “expected.” The Democrats don’t quite agree with that view:

Isn’t advocating violence (hate crimes) against others a federal crime? Thomas Jefferson and our Founding Fathers were proponents of individual freedom and the pursuit of happiness, not encouraging others to attack their countrymen as a means of exercising freedom! Isn’t advocating insurrection during a time of war a treasonous act punishable by death? It would seem that the dastardly Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Michael Steele, and scores of other high-ranking Republicans are skating on some very thin ice here as they openly or indirectly incite rebellion and disruption of our government. Commit the crime? Do the time, Republicans!

Jack you are right. However, they not toning down their rhetoric. On the contrary they are now blaming the Democrats. These guys are frightening.

I keep waiting for a ranking Republican to stand up and be civilized about all this, is civil unrest part of their thinking?

If it isn’t treason, I think it’s seditious but then I’m no constitutional scholar – or scholar of any kind for that matter.

LOL Leslie! You are a scholar here! At this point however freedom of speech trumps sedition, an unfortunate situation indeed. It will take the FBI to catch someone doing something nefarious before anything is done about this.

The republicans really need to stand up to this fringe element (and I’m not saying that all tea party members are culpable here) of their party. It is far better (electorally) to lose a couple of voters on the extreme than it is to lose the entirety of middle America.

The leadership in the GOP and on Fox have been playing with fire for quite a while. Their constituency responds readily to fear mongering, and their primary instinct is to react violently. These never have been the sort of people that think to pause a moment and give it at least a good once over with their cerebral cortex. Rather, shoot first and ask questions later.

There will be a process server at your door shortly, Mike, with a Petition alleging defamation, seeking damages in excess of $10k. Let that be a lesson to you. What are you looking at, Krell?
