An Essay on Hate: Fox News and the Brown Shirts

The crazies on the Right, led and encouraged by talking heads Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, among others, are now attacking progressive web sites that do not agree with their twisted agenda and are not afraid to say so.  The fact is folks it is getting scary out there.  The propaganda arm of the Republican Party, Fox News, continues to spread lies and hate, designed to inspire both fear and anger in the American people, particularly the fringe.  The “Brown Shirts” of Fox, the Tea-Baggers, lead the charge and I am afraid that the 21st Century version of krystallnacht is just around the corner.

Following a coordinated window smashing campaign by angry conservatives following the historic passing of health care reform, the attacks have now moved to cyberspace. Various websites critical of the Tea Parties, Sarah Palin, and the right wing overreaction to health care reform have begun experiencing DDOS, or denial of service attacks by hackers.

These attacks have targeted a number of liberal leaning websites in a continuing effort to restrict free speech, much like the successful campaign of Hitler’s propaganda machine, which targeted newspapers and magazines that spoke against Der Fuehrer and his demented agenda.

According to unnamed sources, there have been attacks on at least 4 other progressive websites after stories on Sarah Palin, all which all prefer not to be mentioned, including 2 major ones.  The attack on PoliticusUSA, administrated by Jason Easley, is the most extensive attack on a progressive website during this wave however, and the site was still down at publishing time.

These coordinated attacks are the latest from an increasingly desperate and radical conservative movement following the landslide victory of Barack Obama and progressive Democrats in the 2008 election. They follow such deplorable acts as windows getting smashed in multiple locations (mainly Democratic offices), people being spit on, a man repeated ramming a car that had an Obama bumper sticker, a hero of the Civil Rights movement being called a “nigger”, assassination threats, the openly gay Congressman Barney Frank being called a “faggot”, a propane line being cut at at a residence, a mysterious white powder being mailed, a noose being faxed, and threats to kill the children of a member of congress who voted for reform.

Remember as you read this that these events are taking place here, in the United States, not in the Middle East or on the African continent.  They are happening in our back yards and some of these crimes are being perpetrated by our neighbors and friends.  Keep in mind that the time line of these events is two weeks, or since the passage of health care reform.  During a recent rally of Tea-Baggers the very mention of Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, brought cheers and raucous applause to the assembled brown shirts.  On April 19th, the anniversary of this most horrific act by an American terrorist, militant groups including the Tea-Baggers are set to gather in various locations to celebrate the actions of this murderer.

There has been a clear trend going on for the last 18 months since Sarah Palin entered the political landscape. The rhetoric has been jacked up to epic levels, and the fear, hate, and intolerance has grown exponentially as a result. In response to the health care vote, she told her followers on Facebook: “Don’t retreat. Reload!”

This is inflammatory rhetoric that appears to be working.  Her words have galvanized thousands of people whose real agenda is not social reform but racial hatred.  The election of Barack Obama spurred the para-military organizations and regular people to express their contempt in public.

There has been a dramatic rise in so called “Patriot” groups over the last year, with the Southern Poverty Law Center recording a massive 244% rise in these groups last year alone. The SPLC adds, “Militias – the paramilitary arm of the Patriot movement – were a major part of the increase, growing from 42 militias in 2008 to 127 in 2009.“ One week ago, acting on evidence of imminent attacks, an anti-terrorism task force raided the Hutaree militia in three states.

Conservative Christian extremists are also targeting Obama with prayers for his death, virtual fatwas, and slogans such as: “Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”

The marriage between the Christians and the Crazies should be enough to get our attention.  The vast majority of Americans are Christian, and while the same majority would never consider the mildest form of civil disobedience, the number of monsters lurking just below the surface is growing every day.  I suspect they have always been there, but now they are getting our attention, thanks to propagandists like Beck, et al.

There is an interwoven web of conservative groups that have responded to heightened sense of incitement from various sources, including the so called ‘entertainers’ at Fox News and talk radio. There is a chilling feel in the air reminiscent of the days before the Oklahoma City bombing by other right wing terrorists over a decade ago.

These latest electronic attacks are just another example of a nation that is becoming unhinged.  If action is not taken soon I fear that we will see more and more violence and many more such attacks on peaceful web sites that set out only to inform, not to inflame..MM

Funny thing is, it’s the ‘lefties’ over here that are doing what the right are doing over there. Odd.

We need a government more to the right over here desperately as our left wingers are real control freaks.

Leftists in Britain are encouraging assassination of the head of government? Why would they do that, when the more left-wing of the two major parties is the one that’s in power?

These folks with such small minds talking to others with even smaller minds are downright dangerous. I think we should build a wall around Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, put them all in there and let them stay together and have a love fest.

prayers for his death, virtual fatwas, and slogans such as: “Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”

This is no mere slogan; it’s actually from the Bible (Psalm 109:8), which tells you something about the real nature of the opposition.

I know this is mentioned in the linked essay, but I thought it deserved more prominent mention.

“Let his days be few and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.” . . . that Biblical quote was used by a preacher to his flock. Infidel is right, the roots of all the hateful rhetoric can be traced back to religion and their Old Testament God of vengeance.

No not assassination of any individual. Assassination of an entire country mate.

Tom Coburn is trying to walk things back, hate wise, I see from a town hall he just recently had. I am so sorry, but these people deserve to wake up with the fleas of the animals they fell asleep with. David Frum coming out a couple weeks ago, saying he cannot think if the GoOpers work for the Foxness monster or the moster works for the GoOpers. Pardon my cynicism here, but I think all this walking back that will be taking place over the next few months is nothing. It is just these people trying to look moderate so they can get back in office and do what they have been doing, nothing.

McDonnell in Virginia, has just signed a proclamation calling April, Confederacy month after the Son’s of the confederacy waited till they got “favorable politicians” in office there. supposedly signed in a hush hush way. Hmm, wonder why that could possibly be don’t you? Something tells me some of these people would not mind having a second civil war.

      Confederate History Month. Amazing.

Ok,Blacks get a month.Black History Month.Whites get the other eleven months.Mexicans get 5 de Mayo, Chinos get Chinese New Year. What do Indians get? The govt assigned us a negative-Thanksgiving where we’re supposed to be glad we got our land taken away! We got an anti-matter Holiday.

I’m on that brother. We’ve been forgotten and are little more than a wind in the pages of time. They call us gut-eaters, and yet we have no day, not even one, that is ours. There was a time when all the land was ours. Now we are gut-eaters.

I have no idea what day Indians get but that is a good question, since this was Indian land before anyone else got here. I have been reading up all day, on a fascinating woman, Wilma Mankiller. She passed away today and boy was this woman talented in all that she did. I had never heard of her, till today, but I did order her autobiography to read up on her.

I was shocked by Tc’s approach to the Baggers. He was actually the voice of reason Jess.

Yeah who knew he could do that, surprise or shock I mean. This is the same man threatening holding up nominations and putting holds on unemployment for millions. I still say he did it to try and say he did something to get some extra votes this year. I am too young to be so cynical.

America is built on immigration. Unfortunately a large part of the nation’s heritage, Native Americans notwithstanding, is going the the way of the carrier pigeon. An irony that simply cannot be ignored.

it boggles the mind… great post Mike.
If anyone is interested in how the reverse party names work out over in the UK… you should take a gander at Four Dinners latest post… it explained much to me that was previously elusive as to why my Glastonbury buddies were so ruddy ‘conservative’ … it’s worth the read the video.
