Glenn Beck Show Loses 30% of Its Audience Since Start of 2010
Is Glenn Beck’s time in the bright media lights coming to a end? The latest Nielsen numbers reveal that Beck’s audience is down nearly 30% since the start of the year, from about 2.9 million viewers in January to 2.1 million in April.
This statistic has, not surprisingly, generated some gleeful headlines from blogs and Web magazines including Media Matters (among others), which posted a long piece about the ratings and declared that “making it through one of his insufferable, redundant shows feels like sitting through detention. The wow factor is long gone.”
I don’t believe that’s quite what’s happening here. I suspect the drop is more likely a symptom of a larger issue: namely that the fringe element (which turns out isn’t so fringe) in this country is, shall we say, no longer struggling to be heard. But first a note about the ratings, as that’s what has everyone up in arms this week.
Beck still has the kind of ratings that would turn just about everyone on cable TV green at the gills. Just to put his numbers in fair context, year over year, everyone in cable is currently down – some quite a lot – just to give you a sense. Beck is down 4% from last April, Bill O’Reilly is down 3%, Keith Olbermann is down 28%, Campbell Brown is down 39%, Sean Hannity is down 17%, Rachel Maddow is down 8%. Also, it’s probably worth noting that viewer numbers traditionally drop in April.
A drop of 30% since January, 2010, will make Fox News start to twitch, because it could be an indication that the curiosity value of an entertainer is wearing off. Like hearing the same joke or watching the same magic trick. He will keep his hardcore fans, but perhaps there are less of them than we thought.

The nut case is still on the air…bot I think he’s getting close to the edge, let’s all keep our fingers crossed.
He’a basically a dick. Still, though, Olbermann would kill to have 2 million people watching.
Quite right Will, although it does depend on who Olbermann kills? Fingers crossed.
This makes me sad. America’s Foremost Performance Artist deserves so much better than you ungrateful rubes.
LMFAO Randall~! I somehow don’t think the drop in points will affect how his programing is going right now. Just a guess, but I’m thinking since he’s still wiping the floor with the other cable shows he’s got a solid paycheck.
Bwahahahahahahaha!
That’s what rubes are for Randal.
I loathe Beck, but for some reason I find Rush even worse. Glenn at least makes me laugh derisively at times, and I have a mild interest in the apoplexy he is bringing on himself. They both make my eye twitch. Watching either of them does for my brain what eating a Big Mac does to someone with irritable bowel syndrome.
Irritable Brain Syndrome – Think you’ve found a new disease.
I’m with you MH!
One of his little minions just recently got a job with that guy Deutche(sp) on MSNBC. It was shortly thereafter that Deutche started calling out my man Keith and Rachel and Big Ed as being just as bad as the king of the Beckerheads. I think he is still snorting the cocaine he supposedly gave up. I watch him and he just looks drugged up on something, except when he is crying Vick’s vapo rub tears. I hope I happen to be watching when he finally does blow his top. I try not to speak ill of anyone and wish harm on them, in this guys case, I do believe I will be making an exception to my rule if and when the inevitable happens.
=^..^=
Now, now Jess you mustn’t speak ill of people . . . Oh what the hell, go right ahead.
I really should not make fun of people who are so obviously in the middle of some type of mental illness, but I cannot bring myself to say anything nice about this particular ass boil. He makes my nervous tick, have a nervous tick trying to understand a little of what he is talking about. I have this Scottish girlfriend and she will say, these people just do my box in Jess, when she is upset about something. Let’s just say this is what Beck does to me, he does my box in.
=^..^=
Those 800,000 viewers didn’t stop watching Beck because they turned liberal or got bored. Some of them forgot how to operate the remote, some of them didn’t notice the TV was unplugged and they couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t go on…
Or, maybe they think the big, bad gubmint went and come and got rid of their favorite historian/entertainer.
He came close, one day on his radio show, to losing his ever-loving mind. It seems like I read, after his blow up he went to the hospital on account of anxiety and high blood pressure.
“GET OFF MY SHOW!”
That is some video of man who is not in control of himself.
Wow, I hadn’t seen that one. Unreal. Thanks for the link. Posted it to my FB as part of my anti-Beck campaign.
He’s just a egomaniacal nutcase that under any other circumstance would be friendless and living in a shady apartment complex.
Lawyer would have to be very shady, I hear people like him do not like sun light.
Keep anti-Becking him Leslie.
I think it is in Britain he is on air with zero commercials. Perhaps our English friend can enlighten us on that, to make sure I am correct. I watch him sometimes too, as do some friends, for the same reason Tim Waters up there does. I want to see the mental breakdown as it happens. He is losing his grip on reality daily and it will soon be all out breakdown. I cannot wait till he is completely off air.
=^..^=
Yes Jess, some people watch him like they watch NASCAR, for the wrecks.
Fail, baby, fail.
We share similar dreams.
To be quit honest, My wife and I tune into Glen almost daily.
It’s not that he has any truth to add to our concerns. He doesn’t. We keep him on as background noise to see if this will be the day he blows his brains out on TV. Kind of like a Car wreck waiting to happen. His mind just is so wrong,it captures that jaw dropping effect.
I’d love for this Guy to take down Fox all by himself.
Hey a Man can dream……
Dream on ,Manly man.
Fox is too big to fail, they will appeal for a taxpayer bailout when they fall.
