The Theology of Hate and the First Amendment

It’s difficult to know what to say when you contemplate the exploits of a group like the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, and their degenerate leader, the Reverend “Skeletor” Phelps. They represent the living epitome of religion gone completely bat-shit wrong. Their theology centers not on compassion and doing unto others, but rather scorning and damning everything from fallen service members to the USA in its entirety.
Their theology pivots on imagining that God hates everything they do, particularly homosexuals with whom they are overly obsessed by anyone’s standards. The Westboro congregation takes the theology of hate so far that they are essentially on par with Islamic terrorist organizations, sans overt violence. Even Bill O’Reilley finds the Westboro whack-jobs revoltingly objectionable.
The following is a clip from Hardball wherein light is shed on the legal issues surrounding the recent ruling and the resulting award of attorney fees to Phelps and his cadre of hateful halfwits. Chris Matthews, as well as Bill O’Reilley, are doing their part to encourage the making of donations for the purpose of funding the upcoming Supreme Court battle against the Westboro morons.
It ain’t over until it’s over.

This bunch of idiots are just that. They are without a doubt the major downside to living in a free country with free speech. It is tragic that they choose to single out any one of our young men or women, or their families to express their misfiring brain fried ideas of right and wrong and morality. It is far worse than even Pat Robertson and the Late Jerry Falwell and their blaming every natural catastrophe on the wrath of God. As much as I feel this man’s anger and torment we must take care when we silence voices that offend us, even as vile and atrocious as this is. Any precedent here may come back to haunt us later when some neo con is doing something we all feel must be protested.
Say what you want about O’Reilly (and, yes, he can clearly be a horse’s ass from time to time), the guy has consistently supported the troops. He’s donated a lot of his “proceeds” to the Wounded Warrior Project and other good charities. This is not unusual for him.

Yep, much as I dislike the guy he has to get props for doing this. Even that Michele, screaming Mimi, Malkin had a link, on her blog, to donate to the cause. This has got all types of people righteously ticked off.
Thanks to Phelps, there is something this country can be truly bipartisan about.
There are degrees of assholehood. O’Reilly and Malkin can be pretty unpleasant characters, but Phelps (like the Pope and his armada of child-molestation enablers) is a whole order of orifice beyond.
This man said it all in a few words. Phelps is nothing more than a con man. This group goes to provoke, in the hopes someone will poke back and then they sue. They have been doing this for forever it seems. I think the first time I heard about these guys was Matthew Sheperd(sp) after he was killed.
