How To Get Out Of Jury Duty – And Stay Out Of Jail
There are probably better ways to avoid jury duty than the approach recently taken by a Montana man.
After Erik Slye, 36, received a jury notice earlier this year, he filed a notarized affidavit seeking to be excused from serving on a District Court panel in Gallatin County. Slye’s caustic affidavit, which he prepared with help from his wife Jennifer, can be found below. The document, of course, did not sit well with court officials and led a judge to threaten to jail Slye.
But after being summoned to court, Slye apologized for the affidavit and avoided being cited on a criminal failure to appear rap. And he also was excused from serving on a jury.

I have always wanted to be on a Jury, never been asked, would jump at it. It would have to be a big trial, “Scopes Monkey” in scale.
During voir dire all you have to do is say you have several friends who are cops, and/or cannot be objective when it comes to weighing evidence, or say you think that defense attorneys suck. You will not be picked for the jury if it is a criminal case. For civil cases you are on your own.
I’m going to use you from now on, if I have to go again. I have someone I know on the internets, that Al Gore invented btw, who is a peace officer and I cannot in good conscience take anything these police officers say as gospel, because he said he might be a saint and I know otherwise. That should do it, ya think ;).
LOL! That should do it Jess 🙂
Actually that did work for me, was telling the truth, my son is a cop.
Cool Barbara! Law enforcement was my life’s work, until I couldn’t do it anymore. Now I teach 🙂
It is very hard to get out of jury duty here in California. It is best to just try to avoid getting on a jury. Then you only waste one day. The “trick” I use is to just act like an opinionated asshole and one of the attorneys will not want you on their jury.
Some would say it is not an act!
I’m curious. Do you get paid in full over there?
I was ‘called’ many years ago and I was ‘self employed’.
My response was ‘Great! Love to do it. I will require £500 per week or, alternatively, £100 per day as, I need this to pay my bills. As long as my financial circumstances are not adversely affected I will be there.
Please note : If they are I will shout ‘Guilty!!’ within 3 minutes’…just so you know.
Surprisingly, I was given dispensation to not appear….
The only time I got out of it was when when I was going through chemo.
I would if the case involved counting the wrinkles on a dogs balls….!
I got out of jury duty 3 times because I was a “nursing mother” and demanded they provide a recess so I could do it, as well as a babysitter for the duration of the trial.
It might be more effective than it looks. If you were an attorney, would you want this person on the jury for a case you were arguing?
