President Obama: Put an Atheist on the Supreme Court-Balance the Power
President Obama should “absolutely” take into account the religious views of his next nominee for the Supreme Court, but not for the usual reasons, Marc Cooper says. “Clearly, the next person to take the bench should be an atheist,” he writes for the Los Angeles Times. Having a nonbeliever on the bench would be a “mighty blow” in favor of the Jeffersonian principles of reason and freedom. “It’s rather staggering to consider that more than two centuries after our Constitution codified the absolute separation of church and state, we’ve never had a single top court justice who was an atheist,” writes Cooper. Thomas Jefferson himself figured the “mystical generation” of Jesus would someday be regarded as fable. So let’s stop asking, “What would Jesus do,” and start asking, “What would Jefferson do?”

I would personally love to see a “rationalist” on the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, if a President ever knowingly put one on the court (an avowed one), he’d probably be committing political suicide.
You’ll see a Muslim on the SC before you’d see an atheist. Unless The Unholy Minions Of Muhammad have passed us Amoral Crackpots on the Hate-O-Meter.
We’ll be number one again, Scientology!
I bet half the justices we’ve had on the Supreme Court have been atheists. Judges at that level tend to be pretty sharp thinkers. Of course, we haven’t had an openly avowed atheist.
Having a non-believer in the Supreme Court would be good, but first I would like to see a president end a speech without saying: “…. and God Bless The United States of America.”
Yes Holte, I agree, I think the word “God” needs to be exterminated and put into the “Book of Dead Words”.
