China Unleashes Porn Sites To Calm Male-Heavy Population

Read Time:57 Second

Chinese web censors suddenly and unexpectedly unblocked tens of thousands of pornography sites this week, sparking—among other things—widespread speculation over its motives. Some believe that the government is trying to distract attention from today’s anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, while others believe it’s a move aimed at calming discontent among the country’s increasingly male-heavy population.

Beijing encourages Internet use for business and education but tries to block material deemed subversive or pornographic and operates an extensive system of Web monitoring and censorship. The government has launched repeated crackdowns against online pornography, calling it unhealthy and harmful.

“I think it’s totally just a glitch. These things have happened often before. (Censors) screw up and some site will suddenly become available for a day or two days and then be back to normal again. There’s never any rhyme or reason to it,” said Kaiser Kuo, a Beijing-based technology analyst. “It’s almost certainly not deliberate policy.”

The sites have become available amid a “sweep out pornography and prostitution” campaign in the Chinese capital of Beijing, which has resulted in the closure of several nightclubs and karaoke parlors.

Every day is Internet Porn Day at my desk.

Every June 4th will be “Internet Porn Day” in China from now on. Can’t let the rabble start thinking about that awful anniversary.

Blocking porn would really kill the internet I think since along with shopping may be the biggest mainstream users.

Nah, I don’t believe that do you? You think that porn and shopping are the two biggest really? Hmm, maybe I’ll do a little looking into that.
