John Wooden has gone to join his wife Nell. They were high school sweethearts who had been married for 53 years when Nell passed away on March 21, 1985. He wrote a letter to her on the 21st of each month for the remainder of his life.

John Wooden coached UCLA to a record ten NCAA basketball championships in a twelve year period, including seven in a row from 1967 thru 1973. His team also won 88 consecutive games from 1972-1974, Notre Dame breaking the streak in South Bend, Indiana 71-70. UCLA lost the NCAA title game to North Carolina State that same year. When asked the next year if UCLA could come back, he said “Where have we been?”. He retired in 1975 following the 10th NCAA title.

Unquestionably great coach, but it kind of helped to have Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton, heh.

He had a good long-ass life. I hope I’m as lucky to keep it all together half as long.

Considering how many new faces Wooden had to deal with every year, his record of 10 titles in 12 years is one for the ages.

I’ve never heard of him but, knowing how sad I felt when we lost Sir Bobby Robson over here – ex England Manager – my sincere condolences to all who loved him.
