Tea Party – Gays and Lesbians Are Too Powerful

Read Time:57 Second

A recent University of Washington poll finds the majority of Tea Party supporters feel gays and lesbians have become too powerful.

Fifty-two percent of respondents to the poll of “true” Tea Party supporters said that “compared to the size of their group, lesbians and gays have too much political power.”

Just 18% of people who responded to the poll support marriage equality, while 88% support Arizona’s immigration law.

Almost half of the respondents believe “if blacks would only try harder, they would be just as well off as whites.

The director of the poll, University of Washington professor Matt Barreto, said based on the results, the Tea Party’s frustration with Washington “is going hand in hand with a frustration and opposition to racial and ethnic minorities and gays and lesbians.”

Noteworthy findings from the University of Washington poll include:

  • 88% of Tea Party supporters approve of the controversial immigration law recently enacted in Arizona.
  • Only 18% of those surveyed say gay and lesbian couples should have the legal right to marry.
  • 73% of Tea Party backers disapprove of President Obama’s policy of engaging with Muslim countries.

Again, difficult to comment from an English perspective.

We, the English – and I certainly don’t claim to speak for England – Drunk I may be but arrogant I am hopefully not – tend to be quietly suspicious of homosexual men and lesbians.

Why?

Peter Mandelson is homosexual and, for a short time, despite being extraordinarily corrupt, was very powerful in government. His clear homosexuality (with a Brazilian lad called Ronaldo I think) merely added to our suspicions about him – mainly well founded as it turned out.

Perhaps, over here, it’s an ‘age thing’?

Two of my best pals in teenage years were clearly homosexual. Back in the 70’s gangs would go ‘queer bashing’ but ‘our gang’ protected them as they were our ‘pals’

One is still a very close mate to me – in a heterosexual way I hasten to add…;-)

I wonder whether the ‘gay’ community over here got so carried away at being ‘accepted’ – pinching the word ‘gay’ annoyed us straight away – they went further than they needed and, ultimately, their justifiable campaign eventually backfired?

I know relatively few peeps who have a problem with anyone being gay or bi but – if you’ll pardon the expression, we do get a bit fed up with it being shoved down our throats – er…so to speak…;-)

Good, it is about time GLBT people had some power. If that is what the citizens of teabagistan think, let them keep thinking that. One other thing may be the allies in the straight community that LGBT groups are getting. I know, from many friends we just are not into labeling who is what. Just a personal anecdote but there are more people like me and Oso’s daughters, that just don’t care who you are sleeping with. Ooh and Oso, this is just for you since you are a fan. ENJOY people and be warned, it is maybe a little raunchy for work computers.

Thanks Jess! Not sure how far down the food chain I am, but if Lady G’s standards drop low enough I am so there!

I always ridiculed homophobia, not sure if I influenced my girls that way or not cause they might likely have come to that realization theirselves.

I LOVE that song.

Gays and lesbians might have even more power than the Repukes reckon, as they are wealthier (most) not having kids to suck away all their money. Hopefully they’ll be able to afford their own lobbyists soon!

They do have a couple of lobbying groups but they are more interested in getting close enough to the power brokers and not doing much of anything else. I used to donate to HRC, Human rights campaign till they went all in, but they don’t do enough, IMO, to help with the cause.
