England 1 – 1 USA

Minor hiccup on our way to winning the World Cup…;-)

England were clearly the better side technically but the USA, with Donovan and Dempsey particularly showing their own technical merit, added to the team spirit and determination not to be beaten and so it ended in stalemate.

Truthfully?

It would have been something of an injustice at the final whistle had either side grabbed a last minute winner.

Probably a slightly better result for the USA than England on balance, but, a draw does leave both nations with their fates in their own hands.

Qualification from the group stages by both would please your intrepid World Cup reporter no end.

It was certainly the best game by far of this World Cup.

Neither side flinched at the prospect of losing and, frankly, went for it.

The USA were, to put it mildly, fortunate to equalise Englands early opening goal from Steven Gerrard but, football being a funny old game, Clint Dempsey’s speculative shot embarrassed Englands keeper, Rob Green, and slightly bizarrely it was 1 – 1.

England upped their game in the second half and frequently had the USA defending desperately but the USA proved up to the task and fully deserved their draw at the final whistle.

Indeed, the USA continued to look dangerous on the break and, had England keeper Rob Green, not made a fine save onto the post, they could have even ‘nicked’ the game.

A draw is far from disasterous for either nation.

In fact, should they both go on to win their remaining two games, then qualification would be assured.

I, for one, seriously desire England to do just that and, particularly after seeing such a brave display from the USA, will willingly cheer them on to qualification.

Well done USA. A wee bit disappointing England.

Football (that’s what it’s called incidentally) is a funny old game eh?

Oh yeah..Argentina beat Nigeria 1 – 0 and South Korea beat Greece 2 – 0……and?
