The Game is About to Begin…Open Thread!
The soccer game between the United States and Ghana is about to begin. Watch, cheer and enjoy, except for Mother Hen who hates soccer 🙂
Feel free to comment as the mood strikes you.

Mr. Dinners. For the duration of the remainder of the Cup, so long as England can stay alive, Casa Lawyer is singing God Save the Queen.
That’s it…empty glass…well pissed…11:30 pm…knackered…
Bed.
Really.
zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Osori and MH…and no…I haven’t gone to bed yet…another voddy called…;-)
You don’t like football?
Oh dear.
I am quite happy to educate you on the beneficial effects of football (that’s football as opposed to soccer…although it is the same thing in the USA for some bizarre reason..) when ever you request such education.
The World Athletics Championships matters as it incudes the world.
The Olympics matters as it includes the world.
The World Cup matters as it, clearly, includes the world.
Any sporting event that includes the world matters – even if you don’t like athletics or track and field as you call it or football etc etc it INCLUDES the world.
Apart from war….when allies declare war on whoever they consider to be the ‘loonies’….sport brings people together (I admit certain ‘firms’ in England who travel abroad to kick the crap out of opposition supporters re football may negate this slightly but nobody is perfect)
Don’t approve of football by all means….a minority don’t…;-)
…but when you think you’ve a chance of winning the World Cup it’s like seeing America (or England in my view) winning Gold at the Olympics.
It promotes nationalism in a very very cool way.
Nationalism is not (necessarily) a bad thing.
…that does raise the question, however, of why San Marino don’t give up on football…..Surely 10 and 11 nil defeats on a regular basis should lead them towards some other sport?…
Maybe they could enter The World Series?…..;-)
Football in either country is as entertaining to me as watching paint dry. I can make it halfway through a rugby game without falling asleep. I CAN watch nude male wrestling though, which is unfortunately never televised and since I lack a time machine or a membership to Plato’s Retreat my sport of choice is a poor one.
I am always for whatever team contains the most men I would like to see naked.
ROFLMAO!!!!
Lawyer….you will indeed old bean…and if you keep your act together you could go waaaay further….
…and as long as it doesn’t include beating us…I would LOOOVE to see that happen!
Right.
Shut up Dinners and go to bed.
hic
…hic….nite peeps….DAMN IT!!!!!!…actually I thought FUCK IT!!!! but I was trying to be polite…bloody Ghana…where the hell in Africa is Ghana????
…nuke it…;-)
sorry…pissed….nite nite….
Notwithstanding the end result, that was the best team to have ever represented the US of A in the World Cup. The problem with soccer in America is that our best athletes will always play football, basketball and baseball, and soccer is likely to come in at a distant fourth place to those sports. Anyway, we’ll see you in four years, world.
ps…you could hardly hear it in Englands last group game..our supporters drowned it out!!!
Now THAT is support!!!!
Right. 11 pm and I’m knackered so off to bed.
Nite America and bad luck peeps.
As I said. Be proud. Your players did you proud as did your coach.
As Englands footballing hero from the late 60’s and into the 70’s Jimmy Greaves has often said….
“Football? It’s a funny old game”
…He also, as a commentator in 1990 said to the studio host, Brian Moore…
“Brian..we’ve seen good balls and bad balls and long balls and short balls, but to you Brian…..it’s been a pleasure”
Krell…I can only assume you haven’t tuned in before tonight (amateur supporter that you clearly are)…;-)
The ‘bee’ noise is some kind of trumpet like thing that Africans appear to like blowing.
It has burst one ladies ear drum and another ladies lungs? or something.
I reckon we should suspend all financial support to Africa unless they ban the bloody thing!…;-)
Hey, I yelled my part. Amateur supporter? How could you tell..ha ha.
I had a athletic supporter once, does that count?
I guess you could say it was a “World Cup”…
ps…I expect an open thread…I have no idea what that is…tomorrow for our game against ‘the old enemy’.
I will comment just before…sober
At half time…pleasantly pissed (The wifey once asked me ‘Is pleasantly pissed horizontal or perpendicular?’)
And full time…completely rat arsed
I may possibly be abusive to Germans by full time. I (possibly) won’t mean it though….yeah…right…;-)
It will be the vodka talking and only if we’ve lost (so if you’re German descendants forgive me?)
You’re an author Mr. Dinners…I was hoping you would do the Open Thread.
..er…I do actually quite like baseball….just for the record…;-)
Bad luck chaps.
YOU’LL BE BACK!!!!
Props to MH I hate it too.
Keep your coach. He has it straight. Tonight it didn’t quite pan out but changing your coach – given the obvious ability of him – would be a bad idea.
I’m so genuinely pissed off you went out. The players fucked up. Second half they got it together but, immediately extra time arrived they had switched off – common problem in football….FOOTBALL…;-)
Credit to Ghana. They suddenly remembered the first half and started to play again.
Not much conselation I suppose but at least there’s still an African team in the African World Cup.
There shouldn’t have been though.
The USA missed far too many good chances – admitedly the Ghanian Keeper made a couple of world class saves but….you did an England guys.
The game was there for the taking. The second half tactics were spot on but…the players blew it.
Not that they didn’t give it their best mind…Donovans legs had totally gone by the 2nd half of extra time…you can’t ask more from a player.
Sadly it wasn’t to be….this time.
America is getting better and better at football and…come the next World Cup – assuming the improvement continues – you’ll be genuine contenders.
Any worries?
America doesn’t like to lose. I so so hope they…you…realise that ‘THE WORLD SERIES’ is bollocks. Good baseball perhaps but, given the ‘title’ utter bollocks.
THIS was THE WORLD. THIS WAS REAL…..and you were damn unlucky not to progress further….
You want to fly the flag in sport other than Athletics?
The World Cup is the only other place.
The World Athletics Championships IS the world.
The Olympics IS the world.
This was The WORLD Cup…and you so nearly went further.
Be proud of Donovan and Dempsey and all your other players.
They gave their all and so nearly made it…..
You flew the flag and nearly made it.
Somebody won The World Series? Enjoy by all means but…ultimately…bollocks.
The USA came so close to the Quarter Finals of a REAL World Series. The World Cup.
Be proud and feel proud.
Your national FOOTBALL team did you proud.
Tune in tomorrow and give good old England a cheer eh?
If we blow out too, maybe we can join you in the ‘bar of what might have been’….
It’s not a happy bar…but it can be a proud bar…
…trust me…I’ve drank there before.
Be proud America. You took on the world and you came closer than ever before.
Another 4 years and maybe……just maybe….
G’nite…
4D x
You should keep in mind we already have “football.” Therefore we have “soccer.” If we had too many “football” things everyone would get confused wouldn’t they? So, in England it is foot ball but in America it is soccer. 🙂 🙂
Okay 4D, your team has got to take it.
What the hell! At least I have another country I can root for…Dual citizenship sometimes has its advantages 🙂
Brazil 2014 here we come.
Sweet merciful crap? – I love that phrase.
Those dang old Ghanadians!! The announcers already are counting out the USA.
SHOUT LOUD!!!!…USA! USA!…and I mean that. I would so love to see the USA in the Quarter Finals!!!!
Love n hugs and good luck from England.
Right.
More beer and HEEEEEEEEEERE WEEEEEE GOOOOOO!
Told yer!…As an Englishman I know these things…USA better second half…Donovan and Dempsey more in the game and you almost won it in 90.
30 mins extra time and you’re a wee bit stronger.
Keep it tight at the back…get the ball to Dempsey and Donovan and it’s yours.
Concentration is all now. Lose it and you lose the game – Ghana are a skillfull side. Keep the concentration and give Dempsey and Donovan the ball and you’re through.
Sticking with my 2 -1 to the USA prediction.
Your fate is in your hands. Concentrate. Tight at the back, close down the midfield, ball to Donovan / Dempsey and it’s over.
Trust me I’m from Oldham…;-)
Good luck guys!!!!
Right…more beer and back to the game!!!!
Sweet merciful crap.
I agree! It’s definitely beer-30!!! I need something to steady my nerves!! I can’t believe I have become a soccer fan. Regardless of what happens here I will be cheering for the land of my birth, England, tomorrow morning.
30 more minutes – I think it’s beer-30
YES! YES! YES!!!!!!! SCORE USA!!!!
game on
Donovan SCORES!!!
USA USA USA…….By the way, what is the F@## noise? Sounds like a billion bumble bees inside a tin can.
No worries America!!! You were behind to England and Serbia and you came back. You seem to kick off in the second half so I reckon 2 – 1 America…you were getting in the game late on.
You need to get Dempsey and Donovan more into it as they’re your playmakers.
Manage that and you’re away.
Also…you need to close down Ghana in midfield more quickly. Given them too much space 1st half.
Even the wifey is cheering here – and it’s all I can do to get her to watch England!…;-)
Coaches half time talk?
Close down Ghana in midfield quickly. Don’t give them the time you did in the first half.
Get the ball to Dempsey and Donovan and the game is ours!…er…yours…if you see what I mean…
Good luck guys!
After three now…1, 2, 3…..USA! USA! USA!
See yer in the final eh?..;-)
Worried about tomorrow? Me? Never!!!…oh I’m such a good liar…;-)
I hate this “comeback kid” nonsense. It looked to me like they could have played a lot better in the first 5 minutes. Don’t they learn from past experiences???
Well that was one fucking ugly first half, yet only down a goal, the lucky bastards.
I already went through this comeback shit with the Kardiac Kids in 1980.
Damn
OK! Ghana just scored. Now that sucks.
I’m not even a sports fan but Holte got me interested in soccer and explained the rules quite well. Now I’m hooked!
