Vice-President Joe Biden Responds to ‘Shakedown’ Comment to BP CEO Tony Hayward
Congressmen Joe Barton (R-Texas), stirred outrage, controversy and even support when he apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward for what he referred to as a government ‘shakedown’ in reference to President Obama and Tony Hayward’s agreement to a $20 billion fund for Gulf Coast oil spill victims.
During the congressional hearing Barton stated, “ I’m only speaking for myself. I’m not speaking for anybody else, but I apologize. I do not want to live in a country where anytime a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong is subject to some sort of political pressure that is, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize.”

Biden’s got heart for people like the woman shown on C-SPAN yesterday. I don’t recall her name, but she owns and operates Maw’s gas station and convenience store in (I think) the Grand Isle area. It’s no 7-11, all glass, steel, air conditioning and shiny floors. It’s old wood, homemade, simple.
This woman is worried sick. Her business, which depends heavily on tourists, has dropped off drastically. To get reparations money, she has to fill out a detailed form, in part showing last year’s gross revenue and this year’s. She opened the old green ledger used to keep her accounts. Jan. 1, 2009 through Jun 10, 2009, her little business had gross revenues of about $7,400. For the same period this year it’s about $3,500 — less than half. That’s a small small business, being ruined for lack of tourists, thanks to BP America’s recklessness leading up to the wellhead blowout and aggravated by deceit since.
This woman isn’t someone Barton especially cares about. Certainly not in the way he cares about his chief funds source since 1989, Anadarko Petroleum, or other gas and oil industry backers.
Biden and President Obama do care, and it shows in deeds as well as words. Bless them for that. I hope BP carries that woman’s tiny business on its multibillion dollar back for as long as it takes for the tourists to return to a clean Gulf, even if that takes a generation or more.
Hey S.W. – I agree what you say about Biden, I find him the acceptable face of politics and if he hadn’t have been badly advised back in the 90s, he would have made a credible and popular candidate for President.
Wasn’t a ‘shakedown’. Obama said ‘cough up’ and BP did. Quite right too. What an odd thing for the Texan to say.
Barton’s an a-hole – no doubt about it. I do give the Republicans some decent marks on damage control, though. They had that frigging douche-bag swallowing his comments lierally within minutes.
LOL! That is true.
Joe’s on the ball today…right on Joe!
I like Biden. Barton on the other hand is what we expect from Texas
Go Texas!!
