Good news! Oil vanishes from surface of Gulf!
Finally there’s a glimmer of good news from the Gulf: the oil on the surface is disappearing a lot faster than anyone expected, according to the New York Times. The leak has been shut for almost two weeks, and “oil has a finite lifespan on the surface,” explains the head of one environmental advocacy group, after examining some fresh satellite images. “At this point, that oil slick is really starting to dissipate pretty rapidly.”
But scientists and fishermen are still concerned about the long-term effects of the oil, and the chemical dispersants used on it. “Less oil on the surface does not mean that there isn’t oil beneath the water,” said one official. And Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen says his boats will keep skimming the water for a while. “We’ve never put this much oil into the water,” he says. “We need to take this very seriously.”

Topped my car up with oil today and was told my oil had only a fleeting memory of its existance.
(Is this too subtle?)…;-)
The dispersants could actually prove to be a bigger scandal than the leak. Sadly.
That was the purpose of the dispersant. It’s only function was to break up the oil into small portions. All for looks. Out of sight out of mind. From what I’ve read oil is still making it’s way to shore. When they made this claim it was done from aerial view. Kinda like Sarah seeing Russia from her house. Theirs still an inordinate amount of methane to deal with. In addition to all this the plumes for the most part have moved into the currents. Where they go who knows. I sound like donny downer, but I will say this, I think things are improving.
I’m just pissed off all those fish are going to get free oil without paying for it.
LOL Randal!!!! LOL! 🙂
It is only good news for BP, it would have been an easier job to have the oil on the surface where we can skim it. By them spraying the oil and allowing it to sink, that is a worse case scenario of epic proportions.
I think we might be over the “epic proportions” prediction. There are several theories about sinking as opposed to floating oil. Some good, some benign, a few bad.
