Memory Lane – “Crimson and Clover” dedicated to Pepper

Read Time:22 Second

In 1968 the United States Army sent me to the Vietnamese Language School at Fort Bliss, [El Paso] Texas.  I heard this song for the first time at the New Yorker Club. I remember dancing with a beautiful young woman named Pepper. Although I was only there for a short time we became close. I think about her even today.

I hope, Pepper, wherever you are, that life is good.  This song is for you……

Interesting. You and my dad were at Ft. Bliss at the same time. That’s where he was before being shipped off to LZ English in the 173d Airborne.

I saw Prince singing this and thought it was him that did this originally, till I did some yoo toobing. Joan Jett did a cover of it also that is pretty good. I am now going to the fallback of not being alive when it first came out as my story for not knowing the song at first.

The old “I wasn’t alive at the time” gambit. The last refuge of a scoundrel, some say. When that doesn’t work try faking a heart attack.

🙂 well since it was in the late 60s or early 70s right, I wasn’t even a glimmer in the eye of anyone till at least 1980, being born in 81.

This song wasn’t a hit were I was at the time. Heard it for the first time in the mid 80s.

Visions of an 8-track tape with a book of matches underneath it so it would play.

What was that other song by them? It was a re-release I think, back around ’65?

My Pepper was “Tita” short for Carmencita, diminutive of Carmen. Got her name tattooed on my arm and carried a torch for years.
