Froggy Went A Courting And He Got Eaten

Read Time:3 Minute, 3 Second

Patrons of MMA are animal lovers. There may be any number of irreconcilable differences of opinion within the realm of MMA – er…speak for yourself Dinners…;-) but the love of animals and nature abounds throughout MMA – and quite right too.

I like frogs.

I have always liked frogs.

There’s something about frogs that it is hard not to like.

Kermit springs to mind. Frogs are cute if not particularly cuddly. Even those little ‘Poison Arrow’ frogs that will kill you if you are unwise enough to get their excretions on your skin are cute looking.

I love cats (and dogs of course) and, as we have currently, five cats here it’s just as well I love them.

One of them is a stray. He appeared in the garden one day and, in a surprisingly short time, moved in permanently and became one of the family.

Usually I get to name our cats. Maximus Spittimus, Scampi, DJ (Duke Junior), Bumble and, the late members of the clan Dinners, Hissing Sid, Princess Puffball, Maximilian, Mouse, Tiddler etc etc etc.

Maximus Spittimus – 1 year old and believes he is the centre of the universe…quite right too

Scampi – 18 years old and, apart from dribbling a bit is going strong

DJ (Duke Junior) – 20 years old and recently blind but still going strong

Bumble – Queen bee. Lost one eye to cat flu as a kitten. The boss.
The wifey insisted she would name the new recruit and did so.

Blackie.

He is black therefore he is Blackie.

Oh dear.

I called him from the front door one evening.

“Heeeeere Blackie!”

Two black guys were walking by. My explanation was garbled and probably unintelligible. Fortunately they just glared and kept walking.

Thank you wifey. Thank you very much!

Blackie likes frogs. He chases them and catches them and brings them indoors.

Then he plays games with them.

The older ones scream. I kid you not. Adult frogs scream.

At 2 o’clock in the morning it is very disconcerting to awake to a screaming frog.

I have saved so many frogs and returned them whole to my pond I may get a medal from frogdom one day – mind you, I may have saved the same frog several times but recognising individual frogs is difficult at any time let alone at 2 a.m.

Nature can be cruel. We accept that. It’s the survival of the fittest. That’s what makes nature tick.

I would only ask one thing of nature. Just one tiny teeny thing.

Please keep your frogs in the pond and underwater from around 11pm to 7 am.

Is that a lot to ask? Is it???

Is it really too much to ask of Mother Nature to keep the bloody little green hoppers out of my kitchen at 2 am?

I can hardly ask Blackie as he’d just say ‘Meow’ and drop a frogs leg on my head at 3 am so please. Mother Nature. Help me out here?

Decimating the frog population of Dinners garden pond must only occur between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm.

Is that so unreasonable a request?

“Dinners?”
“Yes dear?”
“Blackie’s still out. Can you give him a shout?”
“Must I?”
“Yes! I want him in safe for the night!”
“There’s a cat flap, he’ll just go out again!”
“Shout him in!”
“Yes dear”

If any ethnic groups that fit into the criteria of ‘black’ happen to be wandering around my road between 11 – 11:30 pm on any evening please be aware.

It is a cat I am inviting through my door and it is entirely the wifeys fault.

Great Post 4D. My daughter adopted a “Blackie” who kept bringing her snakes. Fortunately, they were of the small garden snake variety. She finally talked Blackie into moving in with a cousin of hers in the country. Now he is mousing a barn when he chooses to be outside.

Like the video also.

We have a bullfrog (imported) in our pond. I saw it last night sitting on a rock. Very cute!

….DJ and Scampi aren’t related but are very much alike in looks and personality. I think DJ is probably not long for this world but his quality of life is still fine. Long as it is it’s cool.

Why are frogs vanishing over there? This is very sad news!

Right. Off to bed. Early start tomorrow.

No frogs tonight Blackie! Pleeeeease!!!!

Scampi and DJ look like they could be related. Nice looking bunch of cats, except for Maximus Spittus, who seems to be a bit upset that your taking a picture.

Love frogs and have fond memories of catching bull frogs as a kid. Giant frogs! Sadly, as Mike mentioned, they do seem to be dying out. Another thing that I haven’t seen in a long time is a Horned Toad. Used to be able to catch one within a few minutes, whenever you wanted. Haven’t seen one of those for about 20 years.

Cool post, 4D! There is a lot of animal lovers on MMA.

What a great post. I have a relatively large pond, as ponds go. It is loaded with catfish, carp, bluegill, and etc. Sadly there are no frogs. Frogs are rapidly dying out in America. How sad. I miss their happy tunes.

Maybe they are dying out in your area Mike. I have moss rock around the pool and there has been a couple frog families have moved in and built themselves a real nice little community, behind two of the bigger rocks. I hear them when I am sitting outside at night time, just singing and talking away in their little home. Found a rabbits nest a little while ago and had to move them to safety under a tree, because my devil cat looked at them like food. The only thing the cats have not managed to get at are a couple of doves nests I had to reinforce underneath, for the babies, so they wouldn’t fall out and get hurt. They do try and get them while they are taking baths though. I have to find a different place for the two bird baths.

Cool names for your cats 4d. They are just bringing you gifts. No concept of time or the appropriate way to give you gifts do they? One of mine brought me a dead mouse the other night and proceeded to just plop it in my lap. It’s gotten to the point, I don’t even give them in trouble anymore, or get upset with them. Kind of like arguing with idiots, in that, they just wear you down with experience IMO.
