July deadliest month in Afghan war

Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

With the latest fighting costing the lives of six more American troops, July is the deadliest month of the Afghan War. The death toll of 66 American military personnel surpasses June, which had been the deadliest month in the Afghan War until July now. The six Americans most recently killed died in several insurgent battles and one road-side bombing.

JOIKAHR, BADGHIS PROVINCE - JULY 02: Capt. Zachary Tegtmeier of Naperville, Illinois with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division returns fire on attacking militants July 2, 2010 over the village of Joikahr, Afghanistan. Paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne moved on Joikahr in the early morning of July 2 to establish a security watchpost overlooking the town; when they arrived, they found the town deserted of civilians and came under fire from suspected Taliban militants ensconced in the surrounding hills. After several hours of fighting, the paratroopers along with Afghan forces established the outpost on a hill overlooking the village. The U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne along have been working with Afghanistan National Army forces for nearly a year in this combative zone in the far northwest of the country, building relationships and attempting extend the Afghanistan central government rule to this rural and fiercely independent area rife with Taliban insurgents. June had been the deadliest month of the Afghan war prior to July with a total of 60 Americans killed in action. Fighting has increased against Taliban forces in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. This is part of the Obama administration’s new Afghan war policy which included the sending of an additional 30,000 American troops to Afghanistan.

According to NATO officials, Coalition forces led by British and Afghan troops launched a new series of attacks in Helmand province, most noted for it’s vast opium producing poppy fields. On Friday, a new offensive was launched near the town of Sayedebad, from Taliban insurgents had been attacking neighboring towns of Nad Ali and Marjah.

In Kabul, Afghan police had to contend with large demonstrations of protestors shouting “death to America”. The angry mob was reacting to a recent traffic accident where four Afghans were killed by SUVs driven by U.S. contractors working for DynCorp International, which provides services to the U.S. State Department. An investigation into this traffic accident is being conducted.

Meanwhile, NATO is losing one member from the Coalition as the Dutch withdraw their military. The last 150 Dutch soldiers are expected to leave Afghanistan later this week. This is seen as a major loss as the Dutch pioneered the “3D” strategy of defense, diplomacy and development. While fighting Taliban insurgents, the Dutch made inroads developing close contacts with tribal leaders and arranging for infrastructure construction projects.

For Americans, July was the deadliest month in the Afghan war in the past nine years since the initial attack against Taliban and al Qaeda forces following 9/11. Surpassing June’s 60 deaths with 66 in July, the deadliest month in the Afghan war is the result of increased fighting against Taliban insurgents.

Every time I open a bloody newspaper there’s more British troops dead.

I’m stopping reading it. It depresses me. What a bloody waste eh?

All those young soldiers, British and American, fighting an illegal war they had no say in, in a country none of us give a shite about.

Terrorism? If it really comes from there just bomb the crap out of it and keep out troops for fighting wars we really can’t avoid.

Hero’s one and all. Poor bastards.
