Last U.S. Combat force leaves Iraq-Bush war “almost” over

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

Now we are leaving.  We have relieved them of the dictator they knew and exposed them to the dictator they don’t.  We have devastated their landscape, slaughtered their livestock, and murdered their families.  Our sons and daughters have died in the name of the George W. Bush Crusade and all those who crusaded with him.  For shame.  Shame on all of you who voted for this fool and supported this war.  For shame!

Mission accomplished.  Here is the brief from Newser:

The US military mission in Iraq is essentially rolling to a close tonight as the last combat brigade rolls across the border into Kuwait, reports the AP. For the record, it’s the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. The departure comes 7 years and 5 months after the US invasion. Because another 50,000 troops will remain for a year in a noncombat role, the death toll of 4,415 may yet rise, notes AP.

I knew I shouldn’t have looked at this, all my instincts told me just pass right the hell by.

That top picture – I’m trying to control my emotions but it’s tough – what’s the point of showing an American carrying the body of a child he either shot or would have shot given the chance, as if he gives a fuck about an Iraqi kid?

US troops regularly blew away Iraqi families, then provided medical care to the survivors. Why not just not blow people away in the first place?

WE invaded THEM. WE invaded THEM. US troops are volunteers – they CHOSE to be part of the military. Iraqis were given no choice – they were just trying to go about their business raising their families and feeding their kids in spite of the sanctions, and we bombed the fuck out of them and invaded their country with the full support of the US public.

What if that was your child? What if you were Iraqi, and foreign soldiers had slaughtered your family and one of them was carrying the mutilated remains of a surviving child for medical care? Would you be grateful?

Maybe you would. I wouldn’t be grateful. I’d be in despair at the loss of my family. That despair would become rage. I’d want to ask that soldier why he hated a people who had done him no harm. I’d ask him why he suddenly had empathy for an injured child, and why didn’t he have empathy before when the child was safe and whole?

Was Imperial Japan heroic in China? Japanese thought so. Anyone reading Iris Chang’s Rape of Nanking would disagree, but the families of those troops honored their bravery and heroism.

How about the 9/11 hijackers? Reviled cowards here. Not so in many parts of the world, where many saluted their bravery in attacking the US.

Every nation and people thinks they are exceptional, and none of us are. None. Americans are no better than anyone else. Geography and immigration, that’s the only factor.

I’m sure I’m gonna get angry responses but it doesn’t matter. I look at that prick carrying the child, and know that Americans will see something noble about him and find affirmation in the basic goodness of our troops and our cause, but it’s all bullshit.

If you see Iraqis as humans with as much right to be on the planet as Americans, you share and understand my rage. If you think they are somewhat lesser beings than us – well it’s a free country. But not any freer cause we killed so many people over there.

Oso, remember these guys are following orders they have been given when they go off to fight. This is the powers that be deciding who is good for cannon fodder. Really isn’t fair of us to blame the soldiers for doing what the mucky mucks are telling them the plan is. I bet the same thing happened during Vietnam, I am certain of it in fact.

Please remember who made that decision to invade and put the blame squarely where it should be. The criminals, in the Bush admin, that needed revenge for an attack of one of their parents. That is all this was about, some kind of, see dad, I got him for you now will you not be disappointed in the screw up that is your son.

I don’t think it’s fair to put the blame on the troops and I never will. You can hate this war all you want and shout from the roof how much you hate it, been there done that wear the tee shirt and carry the signs, but to blame the troops, nah I won’t let anyone blame them for following orders, even you my dear friend and v/d.

I’m glad for the ones coming home. I want the rest of them coming home too. Oh AND I want a pony, is that too much to ask?

The pictures are just heart-wrenching!

“For shame. Shame on all of you who voted for this fool and supported this war. For shame!”

Couldn’t had stated it any better than that, Mike.

Pointing out that we are leaving one country, doesn’t make me feel any better. Things in Iraq were stable, even with us there. We are still deploying to Afghanistan. Afghanistan is 10 times more deadly for our troops.
How do you fight a country that has been fight like this since almost the beginning of its existence?

Tim is right. In this hellish economy, soldiering is at least a job, and the only job many of these guys know.

I can think of a dozen places that could use peacekeeping or humanitarian aid right now.

The pictures are disturbing. Do we know what happened to the child?

The 50,000 troops left behind is common place for us. We never really leave any Nation we invade. Germany,Japan…We still have around 50,000 in each of those Country’s. The main thing for me to celebrate is these guys will come home at least for a while.
Some will be deployed to the other hell hole. Some will volunteer to go. They have to, there’s know work here.
