Online love – The rise of the Internet as matchmaker
A survey taken in 2009, polled more than 4,000 couples about their romantic relationships. How Couples Meet and Stay Together Survey found that more and more couples are finding each other through the internet.
Nearly 30% of new couples now meet online. Today the internet is the second-most common way to meet a partner Same-sex partners were even more likely to have met online than heterosexuals were, the survey found. Among homosexual couples forming between 2007 and 2009, a whopping 61% were the result of an online match.
The study authors — from Stanford University and the City College of New York — presented their findings yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association. They write:
With the meteoric rise of the Internet as a way couples meet in the past few years, and the concomitant recent decline in the central role of friends, it is possible that in the next several years the Internet could eclipse friends as the most influential way Americans meet their romantic partners, displacing friends out of the top position for the first time since the early 1940s.

Hmmm, I should try this “Internets”…
Seriously I think it is really great, there are at least 50 girls I liked and was too shy to speak to, hopefully teen boys are not finding this shyness to be that much of a barrier anymore with the net. It could result in a better and happier community as the boy gets the right girl…if the girl approves of him obviously. Usually a guy just settles for what and who he thinks he can get, to marry to, instead of pursuing who he really wants and is in love with.
I remember a couple of people I knew some 20 years ago had met on the net and married. At the time I thought it was a fluke, used only by the geeks too socially awkward to ever date “normally”.
Now everyone has the internet, so it stands to reason that more than just compugeeks will be finding like minds in the blogosphere- especially if they are surrounded by real-life cretins.
