Solar Sunami inspires photographers
On August 1, 2010, almost the entire Earth-facing side of the sun erupted in a tumult of activity. This image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory of the news-making solar event on August 1 shows the C3-class solar flare (white area on upper left), a solar tsunami (wave-like structure, upper right), multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the stellar surface, large-scale shaking of the solar corona, radio bursts, a coronal mass ejection and more. Those pictures are amazing! The various shots with different spectral filtering really brings out the event. When that Flare shoots out and they pan back so you can see the whole sun, you get a idea of how big that flare was. Probably bigger than Earth itself.
I wonder if that flare shooting out was shown in real time? If it was, it would have to be moving at unbelievable speeds!
Wow, go to the link and see all the other photos. Beautiful pictures.
Those are some fantastic pictures Holte. Rather humbling actually. Thanks.
I saw a coronal mass ejection last night, but I wasn’t looking at the sun… >;)
