Pentagon tries buying entire print run of new book

Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

Former US intelligence officer, Anthony Shaffer, has a best seller on his hands and his new book “Operation Dark Heart” is barely rolling off the presses. The US Defense Department wants to buy every copy of the initial 10,000 print run to prevent the controversial tome from reaching bookstores. The Pentagon wants to pulp them.

The army had cleared the book by Lieutenant Colonel Shaffer, about “black ops” in the Afghan war when he was based at Bagram in 2003, for publication after relatively minor changes. But when the intelligence services and defense department officials saw it they were alarmed.

They said it contained highly classified material including the names of American intelligence agents and accounts of clandestine operations, and demanded the book be withdrawn on the grounds it “could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to national security”.

Joseph Rinaldi of St Martin’s Press said that it had offered to sell the first print run to the Pentagon but the details are still being worked out. The Pentagon may yet regret wading in at all. Its plan to pulp the book has provided the kind of publicity that advertising cannot buy and the redacted but still unpalatable version of Operation Dark Heart is charging up the best seller lists even before it is released.

Rather stupid of them to advertise what they want to keep secret.

I remember that one book that caused a huge storm.
Victor Marchetti “The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence”

Whole countries have probably been overthrown for less.

Oh for (deity of your choice) sake!!!

Our leaders are insane…to varying degrees perhaps…but insane non the less.

Even I personally know a chap who works for MI6!!

I know that ’cause he told me…well…he had rather a lot to drink but he sounded a bit James Bondish when he spoke..;-)

Sounds like a brand of censorship to me. You are right. It is the best form of advertising they could do, and free too. Ignoring it would have served their purposes better.

I’ve got the order in but that doesn’t mean I will get a copy. Will report back when, and if, it arrives.
