The nutters are coming to town

Read Time:2 Minute, 4 Second

How many nutters will have the opportunity to come to Washington after November?

Will they be so few as to be merely eccentrics, or so many as to be the new normal?

There is a fine and peculiar balance here between an establishment which regards tea party-sponsored candidates as ignorant and racist, and them becoming the establishment.

This is partly because of the nature of Washington and especially the political media. These heretofore nutters become people of influence. Influence is more important than reason and intelligence.

The American establishment, curiously, is extremely accepting. It’s the outlandish and the peculiar—the nutters and their adherents—who are not. These are, after all, the people who, against all democratic norms and procedures, continue to insist that the president is illegitimate.

There is not, from the liberal side, with its love of being part of the establishment, a similar lobby whose raison d’être is to reject and demonize and mock and deride and undermine the new nutter class that, very likely, is about to come to power.

The liberal press, so derided by the conservative press, will, in short order, if the nutters prevail, treat them in incredibly earnest fashion.

In 1994, when Newt Gingrich’s nutters came to power, they were, in no time, the toast of the town.

It is true that these new nutters are even nuttier, that we are talking about a whole new level of vituperation and rejectionism and antiestablishmentarianism. There will be, for a moment anyway, a sense of shock and wonder—but then comes business as usual.

Perhaps this is about the fundamental strength of the establishment. That whoever joins it, by whatever hook or crook, becomes part of it. That the nutters, by getting elected and coming to Washington, are, in a flash, transformed into as ineffective bureaucrats as the non-nutters—so we are all safe.

But, too, liberals may just be, by nature, mealy mouths and suck-ups and, also, optimists, who can, somehow, remarkably, find a way to treat most anyone as though they, too, no matter how outlandish and peculiar, want what the liberals want—ie, to be part of the establishment.

The conservatives have accused the liberals for so long of being snobbish and arch and biased, that they actually have become extremely leveled and bland and tolerant.

In no time at all we’ll be regarding the nutters as just part of the partisan process.

Many thanks to Michael Wolff from Newser.

@all in Mad Mike’s America,
I’m off to get completely, irretrievably smashed at a bar downtown. I wish you all were coming with me as you are all better conversationalists and thinkers in arms than the lot I’m about to come across on the humid streets.
We’ll all have to meet up for a drink or twenty some time in this life. (Something I hope to do with Teeluck pretty soon one of these weekends)
Reading the blog this morning just made my day.
Cheers to you all everywhere across the nation, and in the UK and well beyond, heads up high and have great weekend and or holiday.

Thanks, SJ. Clink of the glass to you and all here at MMA as well.

As 4D would say….”More voddy please!”

4D could classify as a nutter here. He’d thump his bible with his glass of voddy.

Here are just 6 words that should scare the shit out of everyone. Speaker of the house John Boehner. That is what would happen if these dimwits get any kind of control of power.

Too true.

As I have occasionally been considered ‘a nutter’ in my darker past do you think I could stand for office over there? I promise I could mess things up far more efficiently than your nutters…;-)

Sorry 4D, to qualify as a true American right-wing nutter, you need to be a Bible-thumper.

It’s too bad that life isn’t like grade school. If it was, all the nutters would be given bike helmets and sent to special ed.

These shitheads would continue to cut taxes for the their wealthy masters which they would fund by cutting services to the poor. They have accountants and actuaries at the Heritage Foundation crunching the numbers as we speak to prove that their plan to lift the rich out of mediocre richness to obscene will be paid for by weaning the poor off poor stuff. And their tax cuts will not only solve the deficit, they will also bring democracy to the Middle East. They won’t call it democracy though because that sounds like “democrat.” They’ll use one of the old approved words like freedom, flag or family to describe their rescue of the Arab World from islamic fundamentalism. And Jesus will return.

I have to disagree. If the nutters get in they may be the establishment but they will set the agenda and we know what that is. They may not be able to eliminate Social Security, Medicare and all but they’ll do a good job of mucking things up. This is about a class war and the stakes are high. They’ll get the elevator and we’ll get the shaft. Then they’ll expect us to pay for the elevator. They will have then suckered a bunch of rubes to vote against their won interests. I’d bet there aren’t any millionaires in that tea bag crowd.
