Cameron moving forward with Avatar sequels: Variety
From Hollywood’s leading trade paper comes news that James Cameron has signed a deal with Fox to direct two sequels to Avatar, the top-grossing motion picture of all time:
“Deal was confirmed to Daily Variety by Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman.
“Cameron and Fox are eyeing a December 2014 release for the tentatively titled ‘Avatar 2,’ and a December 2015 release for ‘Avatar 3.’
“Cameron will begin working on the scripts for the two films early next year. He hopes to commence production later in 2011, but won’t decide whether he’ll shoot them back-to-back until he finishes writing.”
This is great news for Avatar fans, though it does nothing for me. I think Avatar was nothing special story-wise (in fact, some of it was ridiculous), and it seems to me that sequels usually cheapen or degrade film. But I’m sure these movies will be huge at the box office.
WAIT, THERE’S MORE: According to Deadline.com, Fox has made a big donation to Cameron’s environmental fund and Cameron has withdrawn from Sony’s Cleopatra project.

“The mice ate the marijuana” was an excuse no more believable than “the dog ate my homework” for authorities in Argentina, where eight police officers have been fired over the disappearance of around 1,200 pounds of pot.
Yea the plot wasn’t so good — but I’m still infatuated with very tall scantily clad blue women with tails.
My mind stayed securely intact after seeing this movie. I much prefer the Cameron of the 90’s (The Abyss, Terminator 2 and Aliens). I honestly feel like his legacy would be much better without Titanic and Avatar. Oh well, maybe he’ll be better in the next decade.
Hey, you were the one laying odds he’d never direct again…. and in a way I guess you were right.

I didn’t see Avatar for the story…I saw it because several friends told me that the graphics would blow my mind. They were right.
So, I’ll probably let the same friends be guinea pigs for the next one and if they say it’s as good, I’ll see it.
I’m sure the next two will be about civil war. They get lazy, someone is jealous that their leader is actually a human and people take sides. Just my prediction. Of course I thought the movie was totally unoriginal, but then I’ve never made a movie that grossed a billion dollars either.
It was unoriginal in thought but not in FX. I saw it in 3D with Imax and it was mind blowing. I care more about being entertained than I care about plots, provided the plot is not “flintstone-like.” 🙂 🙂 I don’t want to go to a movie to think. I want to be swept away. I don’t know what that says about me 🙂 🙂
I agree wholeheartedly with Mycue, it is as he recently said; “Dances with Smurfs” but I also saw it at an IMAX and it frankly knocked me the fuck out.
I still liked it, because James Cameron always gives me cautionary tales about exploitation, colonialism, the environment and gives me at least one fictional corporation to hate amid all the well-directed action.
No other big action sci fi picture portrayed the precarious plight of an indigenous people being attacked by “explorers.”
I think that his overwrought portrayal of the speculated future collusion between industry and military leadership across space is still vital and relevant these days, even if it was simplistic. I can only hope that kids today squint their eyes in wonder and suspicion at the players in Avatar, just like I did when I saw Cameron’s ALIENS in 1986, and figured out that the Paul Reiser character was going to betray everybody for the Weyland-Yutani corporation.
I will watch the sequels.
I don’t care how simple the stories will be, as long as they are told well as in Cameron’s case. I’ve seen simpler action genre pictures with no such redeeming issues or ideas at their core and enjoyed them just as much (“From Dusk ’til Dawn,” “Bruce Campbell Vs the Armies of Darkness”)
I’ll be there when “Avatar II, Electric Bugaloo” comes out ticket in hand.

The story was old, but it was good to see indigenous beings put one in the win column for a change. I saw it in 3D which was stunning, the real star of the movie was the technology used. I suppose one could say that the real star of the “Jazz Singer” was the talky aspect, it was a technological breakthrough too. And in “The Wizard Of Oz” the change from glorious black and white to all the colors of the rainbow, it wowed audiences at the time.
Will be interesting to see how Cameron develops the storyline for the sequels. Will the Earthlings came back for another thrashing? Or, will invaders from some other greedy planet come calling?
I loved Avatar and would happily wait for James Cameron sequels.
