Internet – 2 billion Web users by end of year
The number of internet users worldwide has doubled in the past five years according to the report, from the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and there will be 2 billion Web dwellers by the end of this year.
The International Telecommunication Union is an agency of the United Nations which regulates information and communication technology issues. ITU coordinates the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promotes international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world and establishes worldwide standards. ITU also organizes worldwide and regional exhibitions and forums, such as ITU TELECOM WORLD, bringing together representatives of government and the telecommunications and ICT industry to exchange ideas, knowledge and technology.
The report said 162 million of the 226 million new Internet users in 2010 will live in those countries, where Web access is still growing. Around 65% of Europeans are on the web, the report said, compared to less than 10% of Africans.
