Laptops can permanently damage skin

Read Time:54 Second

A medical report has found that placing the devices next to skin for long periods of time can lead to “toasted skin syndrome,” a mottled skin condition caused by long-term heat exposure.

A Virginia law student sought treatment for the mottled discoloration on her leg. Dr Kimberley Salkey, who treated the young woman, couldn’t work out the source of the problem until she learned the student spent about six hours a day working with her computer propped on her lap. The temperature underneath registered 125F.

The condition also can be caused by overuse of heating pads and other heat sources that usually aren’t hot enough to cause burns. It’s generally harmless but can cause permanent skin darkening. In very rare cases, it can cause damage leading to skin cancers, said the Swiss researchers, Drs. Andreas Arnold and Peter Itin from University Hospital Basel. They do not cite any skin cancer cases linked to laptop use, but suggest, to be safe, placing a carrying case or other heat shield under the laptop if you have to hold it in your lap.

Notice that almost all of the students are using Apple laptops? What does that tell you about the future prospects for Apple? AN entire generation of future business people are Apple users. So long, Microsoft.

I have used Macs and Windows systems side-by-side since about 1986. As a free-lance technical writer, I had to have both platforms available for different customers. In that time, I have had exactly one Operating system failure on the Macs that required re-installing the OS. Even then, it did not require wiping the entire hard drive. As far as hardware failures, I have had one hard drive in a Mac fail. When I removed it to replace it ironically, it turned out to have been made by IBM!

The Windows hardware and software failures have been far too many to recall. But the quality and attention to detain Apple puts into the Mac make it easily worth the price they get. The resale Value alone makes up for the price differential.

Then there is the matter of the software generally being far cheaper or even free. And yes, I have never wanted any program for the Mac that I have not been able to find. My current iMac runs Windows software and files with no problem. That’s without using dual boot with windows OS available, too. I play all the windows videos, my Flight simulator (IL2 1946) and read any Windows file I choose. It usually does it better than the Windows system does, too. So what’s not to like?

You’re also likely to damage your skin (or at least grow hair on parts of it) by viewing the contents of those laptops.

In the winter when I used to use mine and most of the time freezing my ass off anyway the heat felt real good. I was able to come away unscathed from that traumatic experience.
