New Zealand gets radical over filming of The Hobbit

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

This year we have seen a Fox News sponsored Tea Party rally, next week Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are co-hosting “Keep Fear Alive” and “Rally to Restore Sanity.” The French people are showing their government what they think of cuts in spending, probably in the UK similar scenes will soon be available for our viewing pleasure.

Protests and rallies are not unique to the US and Europe, downunder in New Zealand the people are also getting fired up over things economic, they want the film location of the movie “The Hobbit” to remain in their country.

Sir Peter Jackson, who masterminded the blockbuster trilogy “The Lord Of The Rings” and underwritten by Warner Bros are under pressure from the Actors Guild over contracts for the two movie prequel “The Hobbit.” Deep into pre-production, Jackson and Warner Bros are now considering taking the location shoots outside of New Zealand. Taking the $500 million production overseas would cost thousands of New Zealand jobs and damage their reputation as a rich and diverse location for making high dollar films.

The New Zealand government is offering $60 million in subsidies and now the Kiwi people are being heard. Rallies are planned across the country to show support for the filming of The Hobbit to remain in New Zealand. The rallies next Wednesday have been organized by Auckland actor, Mark Harrison, who’s also created the ‘Keep The Hobbit Film Shoot in NZ’ Facebook page which has more than 4000 supporters. Mr Harrison says the rallies aren’t a protest but more a show of support towards Warners and Sir Peter Jackson.

“We’re anticipating (rallies) taking place in the main centers, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Matamata and Queenstown because both of those cities are extremely affected by by this.”

Mr Harrison believes if the rallies remain positive then Warners will pay attention.

This production has been plagued from the very beginning. The original director quit and Jackson, it seems, threatens to quit almost daily. Now this….
