Solomon Burke – Dead at 70

Solomon Burke, the 70-year-old singer, died on a plane early on Sunday after arriving in Amsterdam on a flight from Los Angeles, according to Dutch national broadcaster NOS. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

His biggest hit was ‘Everybody Needs Somebody To Love.’ The song was also recorded by the Rolling Stones, Wilson Pickett and The Blues Brothers. He also recorded the hit ‘Cry To Me’ used in the film Dirty Dancing.

Burke, who was both a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had been due to perform at a well-known club in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

According to a 2002 interview with Philadelphia Weekly, Burke fathered 21 children and has scores of grandchildren. He lived in Los Angeles.
