That’ll Be The Day?
I read somewhere recently that Buddy Holly had converted to Buddhism shortly before he died.
I have no idea whether this is true or not but it would explain the sheep I once saw in a field in Lancashire wearing spectacles I suppose and it’s ‘Baaaa’ was surprisingly tuneful….besides he was a lapsed Baptist so who’s to say?
Now Buddhism is an odd religion. Well it would have to be bloody odd for Buddy Holly to return as a sheep on the Lancashire Pennines…
On the plus side you don’t entirely die. On the whole I would say this is a good thing. Who wants to die?…to shuffle off this mortal coil?…to join the choiry vestibule?….to snuff it?
Unfortunately you have little control on precisely what you come back as.
Buddy Holly as a bespectacled sheep on the Lancashire Moors may, possibly, be one example.
I have just noticed that my new ‘regular post picture’ or whatever you call them, seems to bare a remarkable resemblance to Buddah….
I might be onto something here….
Siddhartha Gautama, a prince of the Sakya tribe of Nepal was, or indeed is, Buddha.
A bit of a mouthfull really.
“The Lord be praised!”
“Allah be praised!”
“Sidar…er…Siddit…er…Siddhartha Gat…er…oh bugger it..that bloke from Nepal be praised!”
mmmm…I can see why he hasn’t quite caught on as much as God and Allah….
Buddhism appears to be primarily founded on the ‘Four Noble Truths’
1. Life is suffering;
2. Suffering is due to attachment;
3. Attachment can be overcome;
4. There is a path for accomplishing this.
No mention of Arks or floods or evil giraffes here then….
‘Life is suffering’….mmmm….was Buddah married?
‘Suffering is due to attachment’ eh? I wonder…could that relate to being attached to wives? Not all daft then was he old Buddah?…;-)
‘Attachment can be overcome’….not without a bloody hefty divorce settlement it can’t!…maybe he was daft.
‘There is a path for accomplishing this’ – they had guns back then?
The Dalai Lama is one of the big guns in Buddhism. He’s from Tibet you know. China seemed to be quite inexplicably fond of Tibet. So fond they invaded and took the place over.
Few people, if anybody, can understand why they did this.
Tibet. Home of Buddhism, The Dalai Lama, Yaks and The Abominable Snowman aka The Yeti aka – in Tibetan speak – The Migou (you never knew I was so knowledgable did you?)
Unfortunately Tibet had no oil what so ever therefore the USA, Britain etc etc etc didn’t give a monkey’s about China taking over. Yaks milk was never high on the political agenda in the west….
I have a friend – honestly, I have. I have quite a few actually…
Anyroad, I have a friend who is very ‘into’ Buddhism.
We once sat in my garden watching a magnificently beautiful butterfly – a Red Admiral – fluttering around the flowers.
“Beautiful” I said
“Very” said my friend, continuing, “it only goes to prove what I have been saying”
“It does?” I asked bemusedly
“Of course!” he said, “only such a beautiful creature as a Red Admiral butterfly could exist if a human spirit that had spent its human existance doing good had not been transferred by Buddah into such a wonderous creature!”
“So becoming a beautiful butterfly was that spirit’s reward for a good life?” I asked
“Precisely!” said my friend believing he was convincing me of the truth that he believes is Buddhism..
At that point, one of my cats caught it and ate it.
“I think I’ll pass” I said to my startled friend….
My earlier offerings on ‘Religions of the world – Christianity, Islam, Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses – can be found here : – oh..yeah…I’ve mumbled about Catholics too. Only a mumble yet mind you…..
I should caution you that I am being relatively gentle about religion – I’m feeling very laid back and chilled right now – BUT
I feel the hackles rising. These are only ‘part one’.
I intend to ‘go for the jugular’ in the not too distant future.
Stand by yer beds!
As Kermit The Frog once said –
“I am God”
“How do you reach that conclusion?” asked Miss Piggy, quite reasonably
“I survived the flood” replied Kermit, “and I am an evil glove puppet”
…there’s no answer to that
Precisely. We either land up fish food or worm bait.
My mother was a librarian many years ago. On a return trip from visiting her mother some one had given her a book on reincarnation. She’d read basically anything. She was also given a pet turtle to bring back to my oldest brother. Imagine that image as she traveled by train. A pet turtle on the seat next to her and she reading a book on reincarnation.
