American voters abandon concern for wars

Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

Two years after inheriting the biggest mess in living memory, congressional democrats woke up this morning (if they slept at all) to a new order. The House of Representatives is now solidly republican, the Senate is split, but throw in democrats who are republicans at heart, maybe the Senate is lost also.

In a recent poll by New York Times/CBS News, 60 percent of Americans said that the economy or jobs were the most important problems facing the country. A mere 3 percent mentioned Afghanistan or the war. A Pew poll published in October found that 23 percent of Americans said they were following the situation in Afghanistan very closely, far fewer than the 43 percent who were following the condition of the economy very closely.

When an ABC News/Washington Post poll released in early September directly asked how important a number of issues would be in deciding how to vote for Congress in November, the economy, health care and the budget deficit were all rated as very important or the single most important issue more often than the war was.

Perhaps the majority of voters have got their wish, the economy may take front and center stage. Corporations will asking for plenty of favors in the coming months. The health and welfare of the multi-nationals will become a priority, not the health and welfare of the American people. Look for bills to scrap the minimum wage and health care (Obamacare), no more extensions on unemployment insurance (unless it is funded by reducing Social Security or Medicare/Medicaid entitlements). Some aim to remove most basic government regulations, gut consumer protection laws, and cut federal aid to education. Republicans that are even more radical would seek to position Christianity as the effective state religion. The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy will be made permanent, and not forgetting “drill baby drill.” Meanwhile, the families and friends of military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq have different priorities.

Pretty much the Repuke idea for employment thru anti-abortion- keep the women popping out babies that will grow up poor and unable to find work, thus they enlist in the military, enabling the enrichment of the defense contractors and the continuation of aggressions abroad. Hey it’s a job, right?

If you all want a steady job, get employed by a defense contractor.

We hardly hear anything about the war these days. Everything is about jobs, jobs, jobs.
