Letters to the editor: Puppy Peterson hurt in dog fight?
I received the following letter with regard to “Peterson” who apparently got into a fight with his sister over food:
hi my name is emilee.. and i am frantically searhing for a answer!! My dog peterson had a fight with his sister because of food, and last night i went to chek on him and i just thought he was a little bit in shock, but today when i got home he wouldnt even let me touch his back or his rump. What should i do?? and he wont even go outside he just stays in the garage.. and he has never acted like this after a fight!
Response:
Dog fights can be dangerous and sometimes deadly, so if Peterson doesn’t improve within 48 hours, or stops eating, see your veterinarian immediately.
Under all circumstances a dog that stops eating suddenly is a sick dog. Seek medical care immediately if this happens.
Finally feeding dogs together is an invitation for trouble, especially if bones or treats are concerned. Dogs will aggressively protect their food, especially if they are “Alphas” or pack leaders. I recommend that you feed separately if you have more than one, especially if your feeding space is small, as this will only aggravate the situation.
