Nice Guys Like Donovan McNabb Finish Second
I add the traditional Grand baby pic for everyone’s enjoyment.
I finally figured out why Donovan McNabb isn’t as great as his talent. The guy is just too damn nice.
Look at most superstar NFL quarterbacks. They’re all selfish, determined prima donnas who demand to be treated like the royalty they are no matter how they are playing or how much age has eroded their skills.
Roger Staubach stayed in the lineup making Danny White wait longer than perhaps he should have. Dan Marino dictated to Jimmy Johnson when two time Super Bowl head coach Johnson went to Miami. Remember the old St. Louis Cardinals? Their 87 year old QB Jim Hart made the far more skilled and mobile Neal Lomax sit on the bench.
Bret Favre is the best example. Bret treated his back ups like hell. Aaron Rogers would still be on the bench if Favre was still in Green Bay.
Donovan McNabb is by all accounts, a good guy. When the Eagles got Terrell Owens a few years ago Donovan put up with all T.O.s crap the entire year. When Owens was following McNabb down the sidelines one game, ripping on him the whole time, Donovan didn’t turn around and bust T.O. in the mouth. Which every football fan in America was begging him to do.
McNabb lobbied for the Eagles to sign the disgraced Michael Vick. The Eagles let McNabb go a year later and now Vick is the Eagle’s starting quarterback.
McNabb was benched during a two minute drill by current Redskins coach Mike Shanahan for not being cardiovascularly ready. Any other great NFL quarterback would have had to been drug out of the game by security. McNabb went quietly.
Professional sports, hell, any sport, pro or amateur these days, is a cutthroat, dog eat dog world. It’s not enough to win. You have to bury your opponent. And in the world of pro sports especially, your backup is also your competition. Peyton Manning won’t come out of a game to give his backup a chance to get some reps. He takes virtually all the reps in practice also.
Despite what that idiot Rush Limbaugh said about Donovan McNabb being propped up by the “liberal media”, McNabb is certainly a great NFL quarterback and absolutely belongs in the NFL Hall of Fame when his career is over. I just wonder how much greater his career would have been if he’d been less nice.
Reminds me of the time my baseball coach finally let me pitch. Painful.
Joe,
Sadly I’m the asshole quarterback who sat on the bench, only threw one pass all year that was intercepted and ran back as a TD as I was getting sacked.
On the whole, I’d rather be remembered as the asshole quarterback that won two Super Bowls than good old Joe who had a “nice” career.
Asshole quarterbacks usually mean asshole people, I’d rather be a McNabb type of guy, too many asshole around the world.
I always thought McNabb one of the most dignified players in the league and I wouldn’t want him to change, he has a distinct lack of ego which is refreshing, he dealt with people who have outsized egos like Owens and had to listen to the rantings of the asshole Limbaugh. He still has time to leave the game with more plaudits and justify his obvious talent.
Nice guys either finish last or second. If the latter or the former what’s the point?
