No hiding place – U.S. Military unveils new gun XM-25
The U.S. army is to begin using a futuristic rifle that fires radio-controlled ‘smart’ bullets in Afghanistan for the first time. The XM-25 rifle uses bullets that be programmed to explode when they have traveled a set distance, allowing enemies to be targeted no matter where they are hiding. The rifle also has more range making it possible to hit targets which are well out of the reach of conventional rifles. The XM25 is being developed specially for the U.S. army and will be deployed with troops later this month.
The rifle’s gun sight uses a laser rangefinder to determine the exact distance to the obstruction, after which the soldier can add or subtract up to 3 meters from that distance to enable the bullets to clear the barrier and explode above or beside the target.
Soldiers will be able to use them to target snipers hidden in trenches rather than calling in air strikes. The 25-mm round contains a chip that receives a radio signal from the gun sight as to the precise distance to the target.
“The way a soldier operates this is basically find your target, then laze (laser) to it, which gives the range, then you get an adjusted aim point, adjust the fire and pull the trigger.
“Say you’ve lazed out to 543 meters… When you pull the trigger it arms the round and fires it 543 meters plus or minus one, two or three meters.”
It means the weapon can be used to target insurgents hiding behind walls or in ditches without the need to call in air strikes.

It may be a fresh week for Scott Pruitt, but it’s not one void of uncomfortable headlines. “The mice ate the marijuana” was an excuse no more believable than “the dog ate my homework” for authorities in Argentina, where eight police officers have been fired over the disappearance of around 1,200 pounds of pot.
Interesting side note. The Taliban have gotten very creative in their IED weapons. They are using homegrown machine shops to make concave copper discs. What this does is allows them to create something called a Explosively formed penetrator.
This uses something called the Munroe effect. A explosive force can create a jet of molten metal, turning the copper disc that was placed in front of the IED into a highly effective molten metal jet that can penetrate Armour at speeds up to 6 times the speed of sound (mach 6) at long distances.
We have the equivalent in military hardware, but they are expensive. They have taken that knowledge and created the equivalent in their “backyard” for pennies.
I can imagine something like that happening to this new piece of military gadgetry as well.
You know if we would go ahead and evolve into Orwell’s “1984” at least everyone could work on the great war machines. The only thing human’s has really done well is continued improvements on how to kill each other. Gee, I wonder why we live in such a violent society.
Amazing with all these high tech weapons, networked military real-time arrays, remote controlled drones, etc….that we still have to lay off teachers here in my state.
Guess even those weapons can’t win that one.
Jon Stewart said it best last night, that we are the middle man in a war against ourselves.
This thing is more of a long range grenade launcher, rather than a rifle. I wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end though.
I have read that the hi-tech bullets cost about $15 apiece. Coming to a gun shop near you.
At about 1200 m/s
Great. More expensive ways to kill people. Could we cut some of these defense contracts, please?
I can see it now, Russia or China will sell the Taliban an equivalent weapon, just to keep things fair and balanced.
Does this mean we will win quickly and return home???
Definitely, NOT.
