Popular pain killers kill more than pain! They can kill you!

Darvon and Darvocet made history amongst pain treatment pills over the past five decades. Regardless of their popularity, the sale of aforementioned painkillers and their substitutes is close to the end since FDA experts have invoked their official withdrawal for causing heart issues, on Friday.

Food and Drug Administration has decided the removal from the U.S. market of Darvon and Darvocet after a long-debated issue regarding the side effects of the painkillers firstly released for purchase back in 1957. It seems that FDA’s decision is a little bit tardive as per an official of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, who has already accused the responsible authority of late-occurring withdrawal of the controversial pain treatment pills and required congressional hearings on the delay. Public Citizens struggled for about 30 years to narrow the use of propoxyphene.

Food and Drug Administration asked doctors to eliminate Darvon and Darvocet from further prescriptions, however patients are advised to continue the medication based on propoxyphene until their physician replaces the banned drugs with less risky alternatives.

Even though propoxyphene was extremely popular and doctors used it intensively, FDA follows a trend initiated by British health authorities in 2005 and extended by the European Union in June 2009.

The very first step taken by Food and Drug Administration occurred in January 2009 when the advisory committee voted for interruption of marketing of propoxyphene. The vote was followed by a study for establishing whether there is clear evidence on the connection between propoxyphene and a higher risk of developing heart problems. The results indicated a major risk of heart problems, more precisely cardiac rhythm issues even in healthy patients.
