Christians do a better job than Jews?

Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second

A few weeks ago, several Tea Party activists formed a right-wing coalition to oust Rep. Joe Straus (R) as Texas House Speaker. They began circulating emails with anti-Semitic messages against Straus, who is Jewish. The groups ran robo-calls and sent out e-mails demanding a “true Christian leader,” and calling Straus’ opponent, Rep. Ken Paxton (R), “a Christian Conservative who decided not to be pushed around by the Joe Straus thugs.”

Last week, the Texas Observer’s Abby Rapoport reported that she had obtained an email exchange between two members of the Texas State Republican Executive Committee (SREC) — Rebecca Williamson and John Cook. “We elected a house with Christian, conservative values. We now want a true Christian, conservative running it,” Cook said in one of the emails. “Since the SREC governs state Republican Party affairs,” Rapoport wrote, “this marked the first time an elected party leader had semi-openly called for a ‘Christian conservative’ Speaker.” Cook then explained his views to Rapoport in a subsequent telephone interview:

“When I got involved in politics, I told people I wanted to put Christian conservatives in leadership positions,” he told me, explaining that he only supports Christian conservative candidates in Republican primary races.

“I want to make sure that a person I’m supporting is going to have my values. It’s not anything about Jews and whether I think their religion is right or Muslims and whether I think their religion is right. … I got into politics to put Christian conservatives into office. They’re the people that do the best jobs over all.”

Cook insisted he is not prejudiced against Jews:

“They’re some of my best friends,” he said of Jews, naming two friends of his. “I’m not bigoted at all; I’m not racist.” […]

“My favorite person that’s ever been on this earth is a Jew,” he said. “How can they possibly think that if Jesus Christ is a Jew, and he’s my favorite person that’s ever been on this earth?”

This make a fellow think. I would like to discuss some of my friends.

Here’s the thing, some of my best friends are Jews! In fact, I also love cheese, and dry roasted cashews, and an occasional crown and coke – all good friends. I love my dog and my other dog, both of whom are two of my best friends. None of these things are better than me, of course. I am better than all of them. As a human, I am better at being a human than my dogs are. My dogs have me beat when being a dog is the task, but I have not really practiced the way they do. I cannot be cheese at all. Cheese is MUCH better than me at that. Cheese also tastes better than I do and looks better. However, I have cheese beat in most other ways.

I am not better than my Jewish friends by virtue of my gentility, though. I want to make that very clear. I am just better.

It is never a wise statement to say, I don’t hate [blank]. I have friends who are [blank]. That makes a person sound like a bigot and a racist overtime.

I’ve been wondering why there are so many Americans turning up down here in NZ. I’m beginning to see why.

It always ends badly when the phrase, “but some of my friends are…” is used anywhere for anything. Isn’t there a little something somewhere, in all the state’s constitutions about no test of religious blabbity blah? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part, no need to answer, I think it’s wishful thinking. To hear these peopletalk, you would think Christians were being crucified daily on stretches of American highways. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am about sick of all of them and the whole, gotta be a Christian or you are a bad person conversation.

What is scary to me about this trend of conservative religious nutjobs more national than states, because here in CA we bucked the republican trend, Pitts from Stupak/Pitts fame from the HCR battle, will now be in charge of the committee that oversees health and with that, women’s reproductive choices. Boehner has Randall Terry as an advisor, yes that Randall Terry from Operation Rescue and even they think he is insane for their group. Watch for many, MANY states to start being more resourceful as they try to take women back to where they think we should be, barefoot and pregnant baking cookies in high heels and tight dresses. To say I am terrified by this is an understatement by the way.

Although not a Republican my friends living in Texas tell me the same thing as Clint. It is typical of the Christian hate mongers to attack someone who does not subscribe to their twisted beliefs. How sad.

I simply do not understand why so many are putting so much energy into protesting a leader who has proven he is willing to make the difficult decisions necessarily to move Texas forward, when there are so many other elected official who have continue to make decisions that weaken our state or country. Mr. Sraus has a record of cutting taxes, working within a balanced budget, working to grow the Republican majority in the House, etc. He has been a strong and credible leader for Texas. His religious affiliation should not be an issue here.
