God Hates Golfers

Or maybe it’s just random electromagnetic variation.

or maybe it’s a reminder.
When it’s thundering, and the lightning flashes are getting close, standing in an open field on damp grass, holding a metal stick in a vertical position is not good.

When you see a flash, Mr. Metal is NOT your friend.

Lightning kills golfer, blows off shoes

Popular  golfer Marty Jones didn’t stand a chance when storms swept across NSW on Thursday.

The 65-year-old was standing on the fifth tee about to hit his iron shot when he was struck by a lightning bolt on a golf course at Hawks Nest, north of Newcastle.

The force of the bolt blew off his shoes and ripped apart the club he was using.

Mr Jones’s playing partners, aged 64 and 62, suffered minor injuries and were flown to John Hunter Hospital for observation.

”Marty made everyone laugh, was a magnificent cook and always went out of his way for his mates,” his wife said.

”He just loved the game, and there would be no better way for him to go.”

The same storm swept across western Sydney late yesterday, leading to 220 calls for help.

The State Emergency Service rescued people from their cars at Cranebrook and Windsor.

The storm dumped 43 millimetres of rain on Penrith in less than an hour, with the roofs of several businesses collapsing and forcing evacuations.

Parts of Penrith Hospital were also flooded.

Penrith Panthers remained closed last night after a portion of its roof collapsed in a hail storm about 2pm, flooding a Chinese restaurant.

“We can report that there have been no injuries to any of our patrons or staff,” said the club’s chief executive, Ric Simpson. “What was pleasing is that the club was fully evacuated within minutes.”

A forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, Andrew Haigh, said the rain would continue for several days but it was too early to predict whether similar falls could be expected in January.

”All we can say is that summer is more likely to be wetter than average. It’s a probability thing. It’s more favourable for higher rainfall.”

Sydney received just 6 millimetres of rain, compared with Windsor (31 millimetres), Blacktown (26 millimetres) and Parramatta (12 millimetres).

Trains on the north shore and northern lines were running 15 to 20 minutes late after lightning strikes damaged signalling equipment at Hornsby.

The Weatherzone website reported 4842 lightning strikes yesterday.

After the spiders, snakes, jellyfish and tree-dropping wallabies, lightening is the safest occurence in Australia.

Around here it’s the wispy clouds that will kill you because you don’t think you are in any danger.

Robert, I have read many of your posts and you are indeed a very intelligent man. I would have thought you would have figured this out long before this article was published. 🙂

I nearly had this same experience once. The lightening bolt, however, went over me and struck a tree next to the clubhouse behind the ninth green that I was about to hit at. I felt the hair on my head and arms rise about the time I saw the tree explode. Quite a sensation I must say.
