Happy Birthday Jane
I saw on the news that Jane Fonda is 73 today. Happy Birthday Jane.
It came as a shock. My teenage fantasies were filled with images of Jane in many of her films. Admittedly she went a bit odd on the political side, what with her infamous trip to Hanoi during the Vietnam unpleasantness, but hell, anyone looking as good as she did (and still does) can be given a bit of leeway.
It was Barbarella that etched her into my memory. Apart from the striptease in her spacesuit during the credits, and running around in a rather fetching but weird outfit for most of the film, it was the sex that grabbed me (I did mention teenage fantasies, teenage boys are bubbling sacks of testosterone fuelled optimism). The Angel, Pygar (John Phillip Law), Dildano (David Hemmings) all had their evil (but weird) way with her…
Especially that Orgasmatron.
Why was she moaning?
Why was she writhing?
Why was she biting her lip?
At 15 I could only guess, and the guesses kept me going for many years.
Many happy returns Jane, thanks for all the happy (But unfortunately imaginary) memories.
There’s a clip of the credits below.

On Golden Pond was a good flick. There were a couple of others but their titles escape me.
I much prefer her exercise videos to her movies.
Ah, I remember when I was a boy and saw Barbarella for the first time. That might have been the first time it that it ever dawned on me that women might be something more than just mothers, grandmothers and sisters, and that girl at school that was always snagging my homework from me and throwing it to the wind.
