Oil deal breaks ice between Norway and China
China reacted with anger to the Oslo-based Nobel Committee’s decision to honor Liu Xiaobo, calling them “clowns” and threatening countries with unspecified “consequences” if they did not stay away from the ceremony. When Liu – who was jailed in December 2009 for 11 years on subversion charges – was named the peace prize winner two months ago, Beijing had warned Norway the decision would harm ties between the two countries.
Despite the row between Beijing and Oslo, trade ties appear to be intact as a Chinese oil firm signed a deal with Norway’s Statoil. China Oilfield Services, a unit of the country’s biggest offshore oil firm, announced its European subsidiary had won the five-year drilling contract in the North Sea last Friday – the same day as the Nobel prize ceremony in Oslo.
COSL Drilling Europe will deploy a semi-submersible drilling rig to the Norwegian continental shelf where it will conduct production and exploration drilling from mid-2011, said China Oilfield Services — the Hong Kong-listed unit of China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC). Financial details of the agreement were not released.
