Operation Payback – WikiLeaks has friends

Read Time:1 Minute, 22 Second

Swiss bank PostFinance issued a statement announcing that it had frozen 31,000 euro ($41,000 US) in an account set up as a legal defense fund for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The bank said it had frozen the account because, in opening it, Assange had claimed residency in Geneva.

“Assange cannot provide proof of residence in Switzerland and thus does not meet the criteria for a customer relationship with PostFinance,” the bank said.

A group of Internet activists calling themselves Operation Payback have taken credit for shutting down the website of a bank that earlier Monday froze funds belonging to WikiLeaks.

Announcing its successful hack on a Twitter account, the group declared, “We will fire at anyone that tries to censor WikiLeaks.”

As of Monday evening, the PostFinance website was unavailable.

Operation Payback also promised a hack attack on PayPal, the online payment service that last week cut off WikiLeaks, denying the group a major tool for collecting donations from supporters.

With the financial noose tightening around WikiLeaks even as a legal one tightens around its founder’s neck, Operation Payback has effectively declared war on the organizations working to hobble WikiLeaks.

“In these modern times, Internet access is fast becoming a basic human right,” the group says in a video posted to YouTube. “Just like any other basic human right, we believe it is wrong to infringe upon it.”

The video continues: “To move to censor content on the Internet based on your own prejudice is, at best, laughably impossible. The unjust restrictions you impose on us will meet with disaster, and only strengthen our resolve to disobey and rebel against your tyranny.”

First off Holte, thank you for posting continuing news and updates on WikiLeaks. IMHO, it’s a very important topic to be well informed upon.

I wrote a rant email to some friends the other day, expressing my viewpoint on Wikileaks. I think that it’s relevant to this post so I will put it here as well..

The beginning of the new era…

I wanted to write this because I truly believe that we’re at a pivotal point in history. 20 Years from now, I believe that this year and the next will be spoken in a historical manner.

When Mahatma Gandhi marched to the sea, when Betty Williams marched to the graves of those children, when King marched to Selma, they were bringing truth and light to the masses.

Truth about injustice that can no longer be ignored. Shining light on conditions or treatment that is WRONG and saying enough is enough.

It always begins with one person, one icon that represents the outrage of good people. People that have had enough of what’s wrong with society, enough of the injustices forced on people.

Enough.

This is the time. Out with the old order and in with the new hope.

That is what WikiLeaks represents to me. Truth. Information. The end of the centralized imperalism and strategic death that has plagued not just this country, but all countries.

You see, it will no longer be history books written by the victor. No longer will a country be allowed to secretly overthrow, overtly invade or selectively eliminate interests that conflict with “strategic interests” or multi-national profits. The light of truth will always expose the crimes. We are all connected…we are ALL connected.

WikiLeaks is just the beginning. Julian Assange is just the first officer in this battle. It will not nor CAN it be stopped. It IS the new beginning!

To which I say….Enough is Enough!

There is a price for Swiss neutrality. Perhaps Julian could not come up with it?

That guy deserves his own special award. Perhaps one with two huge brass balls on top of it. I’m honestly surprised that the Swiss have done this, considering their usual pose of neutrality.

All governments need areas which must remain confidential. If Assange published details like positions or objectives of Units on active service, or names and addresses of covert agents, then I agree that is treason.
If on the other hand he is trying to remove a layer of secrecy to stop Governments, however well-intentioned, from doing what they damn well want, regardless of their own laws, then more power to him.
What I’ve seen so far is just mildly embarrassing to the powers that rule us (supposedly with our approval) Nothing earth-shaking has been revealed. So the Aussie ex-PM thinks that China could be dangerous, this is news?

I’m sorry but I think this man is a criminal. He cares nothing about the ramifications of the information that he leaks. He should be hung for treason.

Wait till 4chan gets involved with it, this will be nothing compared to what they will do. There are about 300 mirror sites set up to help Assange with this.
