Raising the Barn – Witness – Maurice Jarre

Read Time:16 Second

To this composer who passed away in March 2009.
I’ve loved this music ever since I heard it in Witness. Kelly McGillis didn’t hurt either.
I’ve chosen this purely instrumental YouTube clip. Listen to it and shut your eyes, the barn will build itself in your imagination.

That is one of my favorite movies and the song is superb. The way it builds on a simple musical intro in some ways is just like the Amish barn raising.

There are several things that I admire about the Amish. Anyone that has seen the Amish landscape in Lancaster County will be awestruck.

To me, the way that an Amish barn is constructed. Spoke shaved, post and beam, mortise and tenon joints that are wood pegged. They are a work of art. Extraordinary example of craftsmanship that is meant to last for generations.

This was a good movie and gave what I think was an accurate portrayal of the Amish RD. This was the real thing. I got in on the last of what was communal farming in the sense of how neighbors helped neighbors. Not that they don’t now but it is very different. Here is something you might find a bit interesting.
