Republicans waste taxpayer dollars by constitution reading “stunt”

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

The Republicans wasted no time making fools of themselves, and I’m not just talking about the obvious “stunt” of reading the constitution on the house floor during their first hours in office.  Now they are admitting that they really can’t cut 100 billion from the Federal budget and their much touted and often blustered repeal of the Health Care Reform Bill isn’t going as planned at all.  Here is the story in brief, linking to even more comprehensive reads:

Well, that was fast. Republicans are already backpedaling on a number of provisions of their “Pledge to America,” including promises to cut spending and reform Congressional rules. The GOP had railed against Democrats’ strong-arm legislative tactics, pledging to send all bills through a full committee process and to “let any lawmaker—Democrat or Republican—offer amendments.” Yet with its very first act—health care reform repeal—it will break both pledges, Politico reports.

Republicans also haven’t put the constitutional citations they promised on any early bills, though they say they may add them later when the bill hits the floor. The GOP has also ditched a promise to publicly reveal who attends committee meetings, something that could be used against reps who play hooky. Oh, and that pledge to cut $100 billion in spending in the first year? They’ve admitted that’s not actually feasible, the AP reports, thanks to the vagaries of the budget cycle.

I agree, Mike, that this was a flat-out dog and pony show. But I don’t agree that the Constitution is “silly old piece of paper.” Yes, it was written by men who were exceedingly flawed. BUT these very same individuals also created a document and system of governance that allowed for an amelioration of these evils (the amendment process, an independent judiciary, etc.). I was actually much more insulted by the fact that Mr. Boehner appeared to be using this document for his own naked political agenda.

Will, Normally I would agree with you but the repubs have literally be making a joke of the Constitution. They throw it around like it means something but run all over it at their discretion. During the Bush Administration they ran over the Bill of Rights with the Patriot Act like bush hog over a brier patch. The Supreme Court has now made a joke of the campaign finance laws so there is enough money spent during an election year that we could most likely pay of a good part of the national debt. During the discussion of the health care reform representatives and senators were so blatantly voting their pocketbooks instead of the needs of the American people that someone should have put them all in jail. The best thing the authors of the Constitution did was make it difficult as hell to change it or amend it or we would already be a banana republic. As it is it will take another 4 or 5 decades and we will be acting like a second rate country with our haves and have nots. You may disagree with this but the overly greedy all for me and screw the rest attitude that is going on right now is as bad as it ever has been in this country and I don’t see any white hats riding to the rescue.
