The Christian God: A Recount

Read Time:2 Minute, 37 Second

A wise visitor at Mad Mike’s asked a poignant question. Noting how similar Christianity is to Greek Mythology, he asked: Isn’t Christianity just as bogus, despite the Greeks’ numerous Gods?

When Christianity took over, there were no Olympian survivors. Some atheists argue to the contrary, alleging that Jesus is Zeus or Jesus is Hercules, but it is not true. However, Jesus did not accomplish this all on His own. In the days of Constantine, it took an army of Christian gods to permanently defeat Olympus.

Christianity has a good God. We call Him God. It has a bad god also. We call him Satan. It has a bunch of bad gods. We call them demons. It has some good gods that are lesser than God, but equal, a concept that requires a great deal of faith to understand. The two other good gods are Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Christian Mythology and Greek Mythology both had numerous Gods. The Christians lied about it, presumably to allow them an assortment of deities that their newly converted pagans required, and at once preserve the Jewish monotheistic tradition expected by their religious base. An idol known as the Trinity, is the main difference in the two faiths’ polytheistic crew. In most religions, you minimally have a good god, a bad god, and some lesser Gods. The good god is usually the most powerful.

With respect to the number of gods in the two mythologies, Christianity is far more “bogus.” Greek gods are simple. There are a bunch of them and they each have a purpose. The Greek gods were open and proudly proclaimed their identity and never impersonated some other Greek God. The Christian gods are not only invisible, but duplicitous. They pretend to be rolled into a single Entity, God (the Trinity). They make this claim, despite the fact that they are almost always itemized in the paperwork. The Christian Bible speaks of God, the Father; Jesus, the Son; the Holy Spirit, the Sidekick. You rarely hear talk of what the Trinity did or thought or felt.

The most likely explanation for the Christian org chart is that the Christian Church did not want to appear to be polytheistic, as that is a Pagan concept. The word Pagan is an older term used to mean “spiritually dissimilar to us.” It is a synonym for evil. Today we just say “not like us,” and everyone knows this means evil without having to have our religious bigotry enshrouded in some obscure term.

To avoid admitting that Christianity is polytheistic, Christians define Satan as a bad angel and they describe God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as one thing: all God. Christians could have theoretically stacked as many deities into the pile as they wanted, designating the rest as angels. I often wonder why we chose only three good gods and hosts of bad gods, which seems like an unbalanced population for a religion that espouses good over evil.

Why only three good gods? Why only three pancakes? Some number always has to be chosen and for a monotheistic religion, three good gods is a lot.

The Abrahamic religions decided on one God in a sort of buy out of the other (many) religions, Gods and cults. Instead of a God of the Sea, Neptune or Poseidon for example, they decided one God to manage earth, wind, fire and water, not forgetting the Sun, Moon, Galaxy and pretty much the whole Universe. Cut out the competition and keep all the tithe for yourself. Over the centuries mankind has whittled away countless Gods, one to go.

Holte, I agree with everything you said, except for the one God to go, part obviously. There are still several Gods in Christianity. Christians just don’t admit it. Over the next century, if America survives, the hold Christianity has on America will cease to exist. The reason is not atheism or other thinkers. They could never derail Christianity. The Christians will do it.

Christians always exclusively used faith to combat logical and scientific refutations. They are now trying to use logic and science to counter them.

Setting a precedent in the mind of a Christian where his religion has to make sense is a mistake, and one Paul would never have made. Christians think they are competing with intellects when they do this, but they are not. This approach will be their undoing.

You make that point so well, and it does seem as if it could prove Christianity’s undoing. Might relegate Christianity to the third world eventually.

John,
Leviticus 13:4-5
“Verily I say unto thee, there shall come from the southwest an unbeliever who hast questioned the scripture, and the lord jehovah shall smite him, and his name shall be Myste”.

OK made that up.

Seriously,Christianity as I understand it was very much a proselytizing religion in the panorama of Biblical times,I don’t know if people turned down the TV and ducked down like we do when Jehovah’s Witnesses come around but maybe some similar circumstance occurred.

They definitely incorporated local gods and festivals and beliefs into the religion, then used revisionist history to make it appear to have been that way all along. Sort of the way Jesus became the son of God after the Council of Niceae (sp?),before that he was a prophet but a man, born of the Virgin Mary (which I believe). It’s a long accepted practice known as “making up the rules as you go along”.

We didn’t see quite as much of it here in the “New World”, I don’t know if Christianity had matured as a religion or because the locals inferior weaponry and susceptibility to disease made them less of a threat, thus less need to make Christianity adapt to the indigenous population.

Catholicism did acknowledge the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Mexico as well as make the effort to merge All Souls Day with ancestral honoring festivity as well as allowing harvest and earth mother religious observances to meld into local doctrine.

I see the failings here,as well as the horrible atrocities committed in His name as the weakness and folly of man, not God.

Great post, and I don’t mean this to sound like I’m discounting anything you wrote, because I’m pretty much in agreement with all of it.

Oso,

The early church leaders were geniuses. Paul is one of my greatest heros and when I list “my heros” he is always in the list. He uses proselytizing and cooperation over compulsion. Machiavelli wrote the Prince, in which he asked: “Is it better to be feared or loved?” He was considered a genius of his time. Long before him, Paul answered the question: Both.

Additionally Paul promised great reward AND the avoidance of great agony.

He offered faith, something reason could not derail, as the tool used to believe.

There are other things, but I am babbling now.

The fact that Christianity is a compromise between “paganism” and Judaism is something I greatly admire. I certainly mean no disrespect. Moreover, it is funny as hell.

Thanks for allowing me to post it. I did not get attacked with yet, whereas I would have on most cites. This tells me that MMA has a houseful of gentlemen or a bunch of heathens.

Enjoyable. Here’s a video I found once about the pagan origins of Christianity. It’s a curious thing.

There is nothing truly new, just echos of what has come before but modified for better or worse.
