Dallas Mayor gives dog murderer/convicted felon Michael Vick keys to city
The YouTube video that went viral yesterday sparked anger among many viewers. Not only for the obvious disinterest displayed by Michael Vick to a dog owner that adopted one of his former dogs, but also for the portion of the video that showed Michael Vick being handed over the keys to the city.
How could the city’s highest honor be bestowed upon a former dog-fighter? Well, maybe that honor isn’t being handed to him after all.
According to MyFoxPhilly, the Mayor of Dallas wants those keys back. Vick received the city keys on Saturday from Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway – a man that is actually a “vice-mayor” to the city.
On Monday, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert issued a statement indicating that Caraway did not have the authority to issue the ceremonial honor to Vick and that it was not sanctioned by his office.
He went on to advise that the honorary key was given to Vick without his knowledge or approval.
The man that bestowed the honor issued his own statement on Monday. Caraway released a statement that Michael Vick deserved the honorary key because he “made some bad choices”, but was now working to educate children to stay away from drugs and to stay in school.
With two “mayors” arguing over the city’s highest honor – all you can really say is “awkward”…
As for the people that left comments about Michael Vick having no choice but to ignore the man in the video that was trying to speak with him about the former fighting dog – the people that stated that his body guards were preventing him from speaking…. Who hired those body guards? If the man wanted to speak – to say something productive, it is safe to assume that he had the power to do so.

Michael: I am in NO way excusing Vick’s behavior. I love dogs, too. I’ve always had dogs (critters of all kinds my whole life actually & I’m a savior of injured critters as well) and I currently have 2 dogs now (would have more if I had more land). I’m only trying to look at this particular situation from a logical point of view. If I look at it with my emotions I might be inclined to seek out Vick myself and then we’d really have some videos to watch.
I didn’t think you were excusing Vick’s behavior Pam. As a matter of fact I was under the impression that we were both on the same side of the fence here. I despise Mike Vick.
SagaciousHillbilly made some valid points but I’d like to add that Michael Vick is the BOSS of said Bodyguards. He could’ve said ONE word and those Bodyguards would’ve “heeled” (no pun) in order for Vick to speak with the Reporter.
Now, the Reporter didn’t actually reveal his intentions. Meaning, he said he had adopted one of the dogs and wanted to ask a few questions. Vick didn’t know from that whether the Reporter wanted a friendly exchange or a confrontation. I’m sure he has people confronting him over this issue all the time (hence the Bodyguards).
Giving the key to the city to Michael Vick was a terrible lapse in judgment on the Vice-Mayor’s part . There are thousands of people who donate their time educating and helping children who have NOT harmed innocent animals and who are NOT convicted felons out on parole. I think Mr. Caraway needs to get the key back and give it to a more appropriate person during a ceremony in which Vick gives the key BACK, showing HE realizes HE doesn’t deserve it.
P.S. That dog (Mel) sure is a cutie. It’s great that many of those dogs were saved. I read about another that’s a Companion dog for troubled kids. It’s really great to know that at least there are some happy endings to such a horrific incident.
I have lots of dogs Pamela, as you may know from what I write and post, and I treasure each and every one of them. The idea of torturing these beautiful and loyal creatures is beyond my comprehension and I spent most of my life either as as cop or in the military. The thought of giving this killer anything but …. never mind. You know what I mean. Thanks for stopping by.
Lst me take a look at this from a slightly more objective perspective. . . I am an animal lover. I have more animals than most people and they all have incredible lives. I take in any stray that shows up on my farm. I find Vick’s past actions reprehensible. Absolutely inexcusable.
Sadly, the guy grew up with dog fighting being some sick kind of norm. No excuse, but let’s try and be understanding. He got busted for it. He went to prison. He seems to have reformed himself and has denounced his past actions every chance he’s been given.
About the video. . . he’s being pushed through a hallway by all sorts of people. The reporter really only gets something that looks like his attention when he’s outside probably getting ready to duck into a car and the reporter is standing inside.
Yea, the thug body guards are a little bit thuggish. . . duh.
I don’t think this video is all that much of an indictment of Vick as it is made out to be.
As for the vice-mayor. . . very, very poor judgement. Maybe in 15 yrs when Vick has really shown a conclusively reformed mind and done incredible public service work. . . maybe, but not a convicted felon who is still on probation.
Well…OK. You do make some valid points as I most reluctantly admit SH 🙂
I support SH’s analysis here. That said, if Michael Vick sees this video, whether he reaches out to this reporter is what will speak volumes to his character.
what a smarmy fuck. Waste of good oxygen someone else could be using.
As far as I’m concerned, Michael Vick is one of the most useless people on the face of the planet. He is a waste of air.
I agree and am hopeful that some day this miserable POS gets the real “justice that he deserves.
That evil bastard doesn’t deserve the keys to anything. Good for the Dallas mayor going on the record, but he should have gone further and explained why, just in case there are people living in a closet somewhere that don’t realize what a reprehensible prick they are (almost?) honoring.
I’d like to see a confrontation between that dog owner and Vick sans bodyguards.
Michael Vick is the scum of the earth. I also have little respect for the football fanatics who not only didn’t object when he was set to return to the team, they applauded it.
I agree. It is outrageous to have given Vick the honor of the keys to Dallas after his history.
