Ken Salazar gets stuck in the California sand
A quiet if adrenaline-filled promotion for President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative took a turn for the ironic on Sunday as Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s off-roading adventure quickly became stuck in the sand.
The secretary, along with Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey, journeyed to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area in the California Desert to promote the conservation of open spaces. Salazar was sure to stress that the push for outdoor recreation includes activities like off-roading, especially in areas like the 160,000-acre Imperial Sand Dunes set aside specifically for that purpose.
To that end, Salazar climbed behind the wheel of a sand rail, a kind of lightweight dune buggy, and set off into the dunes. Federal and local agents had to respond quickly, however, when the secretary spun out his rear axle deep into the sand.
Perhaps seeking to scale back the incident, the Interior Department’s press shop made sure to describe the dune in a press release as “one of the more challenging.”
The miring didn’t seem to leave Salazar fazed. “It was fantastic,” he told the San Diego Union-Tribune. No word on how well Abbey drove.

I was gonna say basically what Trog said. Burning fossil fuels for recreation is *not* conservation.
Tax dollars at work. Jeez.
Aren’t dune buggies/motocrossers/snowmobilers causing some destruction of recreation areas? Or am I confusing this with those vehicles in “protected wilderness” areas?
Either way, to hell with that corporaDem-appointee.
