The following offbeat story was submitted by reader J. S.  Woochy.  Enjoy:

A Shelton man accused of sexually assaulting his neighbor’s horse has applied for accelerated rehabilitation.

Marian Wegiel, 63, of 11 Partridge Lane, appeared Wednesday in Superior Court in Derby before Judge Richard Arnold.

Wegiel’s attorney, Ralph Crozier of Seymour, said his client applied for the program. Defendants allowed into the program are put on probation for up to two years, and, if they successfully complete it, the charges are dismissed.

“Mr. Wegiel has never been arrested for any crime before this, and I think he is eligible,” Crozier said.

Crozier said Wegiel denies abusing the horse.

Crozier said Wegiel is a “decent human being,” who has been “churchgoing all his life.” Crozier said he has dozens of letters from people who wrote in support of Wegiel, such as friends and fellow parishioners.

Wegiel is due back in court March 11, when a judge will decide if he should be allowed into the program. It is for first-time offenders, and it is generally not permitted in serious cases.

Christine Flannery of Shelton, whose family owns three horses, including Indiana, which Wegiel is accused of abusing, attended the court proceeding.

Afterward, she said she objects to Wegiel being allowed into the program.

“It would be a slap on the wrist,” Flannery said. “He deserves more punishment.”

Wegiel is charged with cruelty to animals, fourth-degree sexual assault, third-degree criminal trespass and second-degree breach of peace in the Oct. 18 incident.

Shelton police said they were sent to the Flannery residence at 8 Partridge Lane on a report of a man putting his hand and arm inside a horse’s vagina, and the horse appearing to be in pain. When police arrived, they said they found Wegiel in the corral.

Another family member, Alison Flannery, has said she saw the horse being abused. She said from the time she saw it and called 911 to the time police arrived and the man stopped, almost 15 minutes had passed.

According to police, Wegiel said he was comforting the horses after they had been scared by a loud noise. Wegiel allegedly said he may have inadvertently put his fingers inside a horse. There were three horses in the corral, but only the female horse appeared to have been touched, police said.

Crozier has said he believes there was a communication problem when Wegiel, whose native language is Polish, told police what happened.

Now…having a somewhat sketchy knowledge of a horses anatomy…I can only hope it was the man entering the horse rather than the other way around.

If not I can only say tears are already in my eyes.

I once had a friend nicknamed ‘Donkey’ but perhaps we shouldn’t go there…

You know what this is, this is a direct result of “teh gheyz” being allowed to marry. You people just cannot see it. Repent or something just as useless. I got nothing else that I have not said at my more uncivilized houses on the internet today.
