Glenn Beck Fired by Fox

Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

Although he claims he wasn’t fired outright, the die is certainly cast, as Fox tells Glenn Beck, albeit quietly, “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.”  Here is the story from the Examiner.com on the fate of the former zookeeper with a drinking problem:

Glenn Beck is leaving Fox News later this year we learn today, terminated from his show “The Glenn Beck Variety Hour,” but unlike the vaguely comparable host Keith Olbermann, Beck wasn’t officially fired.

Rather than an overt firing, Fox and Beck’s media company released a mutual statement that deemed it a “transitioning off.” Beck will abandon his 5 p.m. show but continue to take on special programming assignments with Fox News.

Still it is nearly an issue of semantics as the network attempts to distance itself from his brand of politics.

The forces leading up to the transition are primarily external, by way of advertisers, rather than internal conflicts, of which there are some.

Advertisers were not the only issue though as Beck lost a good portion of his audience. He garnered three million viewers last summer at his best with a claim to fame as host of the most popular show on cable TV. Since then his rating have dropped 40 percent by one estimate and several advertisers have bailed out.

As for what led up to Glen Beck being effectively terminated, it is speculative.

Though a casual observer might say it appears to correlate with his programming focus towards radical Islam.

In one series, he paralleled Islam and Christianity’s view of the world’s end, ultimately indicating that radical Islamic political leaders – who we know by name – and their followers are purposefully accelerating the end days by putting into motion a series of events that will lead to the appearance of the antichrist.

Even if one does agree with his theories, his presentation has been criticized to the point where he is considered little more than a spectacle, according to some critics.

“He’s a spectacle,” says Jeffrey Jones, a professor of media and politics at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. “He wears viking helmets, he pours gasoline on things. It wouldn’t surprise me that what was once a fresh voice has now become a routine, that audiences might be saying, ‘Well, I’ve seen that before.’ ”

And it probably didn’t help matters that Beck warned viewers not to use Google because it is “deep in bed with the government,” The Christian Science Monitor reports.

Lastly, Beck publically criticized colleagues at Fox News as well.

MSNBC tried the nuanced approach with Olbermann, ousting him from a slot but not firing him directly, during the 2008 presidential election campaign. But when Olbermann left for good, it was clear it wasn’t a transitioning, indicating Beck is on fair terms with the company who may prefer to air his show given the right numbers.

Why do you think Glenn Beck was terminated from his show?  Let us know in the comments section.

I get so angry when the truth is NOT TOLD. Why did this article say “he has a drinking problem”. He is a recoveing alcholic for over 30 years, NEWS FLASH: HE DOESN”T DRINK”. Glenn Beck has been telling us for OVER a year the gas prices will go up, as will groceries, and many other thing. Glenn Beck tells the truth, and maybe just maybe he was becoming MORE POPULAR than Bill O’Reilly, he has a lot of pull on Fox. WHO KNOWS. GOD BLESS GLENN BECK, he will survive and raise all above this.

Oh now that makes a lot of sense. He is more popular than anyone at Fox but they fire him because of that? Are you completely stupid or do you just sound that way? Popularity = sponsors = money you lunatic.

Nice cheap shots there Jenny40. (who puts their age as part of their sign on anymore?)
You’re comments at Joan make no sense. Whats the problem with good ratings and success?
I mean Good ratings=money=takes and taxes equal more money for people who want to live off the system. I mean it’s everything you dreamed of!

Hey Jenny lighten up! No one can be a bitch all of the time. It seems that you are really making a fool out of yourself. I mean really, how much maturity does it take to make such a low blow as picking on someones parents, denigrating their religion, and make fun of someone who has or had a drinking problem? C’mon I mean Teddy Kennedy had a drinking problem but I’ll bet you never made fun of him. What you’re writing is pure hatred and anger. What’s up with that? So what, you’re an atheist. Am I supposed to be “scurred” of that? And an atheist for 40 years? How cool is that?! You have a religion too! Jenny, I suggest you attend some anger management seminar.
Stop being so angry and hypercritical of you’re fellow man and maybe have some sex or something. Maybe you should cut on yourself literally (ya probably already do) get some friends, go do something. Menopause is a BEAR eh??

Ricky Lee is right about one thing, it’s all about the ratings. Where he got this gibberish about Beck losing 40% of his audience is something else. I looked at his Nielsen Ratings for yesterday and for the same day 6 months ago. Oddly enough, October 6, 2010 was also a Wednesday, so the day of the week has no bearing. Beck has actually had a slight gain in every category.

October 6, 2010 2,164 458 1,035
April 6, 2011 2,230 634 1,042

Sorry John, Michael and Ricky Lee, your statements just don’t stand scrutiny.

It’s very simple, and you can take this to the bank. I was in media sales for 30 years. Fox is interested in only two things with any of their on air hosts. Those two things are ratings and advertising revenue. If Glen Beck lost 40% of his audience and most of his advertisers the simple fact is that Fox fired him. They can slice it any way they want to and put any spin on it that they please but the simple fact is if your ratings drop by 40% and advertising dollars decline…you are toast!!!!!

If I were a conservative, I would have wanted him out of there. His doomsday message was an easy target for opponents and was an overall philosophy was out on a different limb than the other monkeys (no offense to the other monkeys, or to Mr. Beck himself, should he happen upon this comment).

As a liberal, I hate to see him go, because his ratings were dropping. The decline of someone that popular was divisive to the party, whose platform seems to be built by FOX. More division is what we need.

You are right John. When the enemy is divided it is good for the other side. The same rule applies to the Left which is why I have tried to caution the Obama Haters, who keep running around looking for a candidate to run against him, all the while trashing every single decision he makes.
