Musings From The Edge: The Donald Game

Read Time:3 Minute, 15 Second

I have been following the news lately about “The Donald”, aka Donald Trump, and his consideration of running for president. Of special interest has been joining his voice with that the whacked out birthers who had, for all intent and purposes, been pushed down to the cellar of importance of late. I think there is something that many of the pundits may be missing in their rush to jump out first with a news story. Donald Trump is, if nothing a very shrewd, calculating businessman and self promoting person. He is also known for something known as the “art of the deal” which includes getting people looking in one direction when they should be looking elsewhere.

Consider the following; Trump has always been more liberal to moderate on most social issues. He has always been pro choice and pro universal health care. He supported the idea of limiting the salaries of the wall street bankers whose companies took bailout monies. He is tolerant on the issue of gay rights and supports hate crime legislation for crimes against gays. He sits pretty much in the middle of many other issues. He supports gun ownership but would ban assault weapons, and would link free trade with China to human rights. These type stances simply do not seem to put him in the same camp with traditional birthers and neo cons. The old lazer thinks that there may be another game afoot here.

The issue of President Obama’s birth place had pretty much died down for the time being and the vast majority of rational Americans have come to consider it a non issue. However, by Trump bring it up at this time while the Republican candidates are jockeying for position in their upcoming primaries this non issue is suddenly up in the air swirling around in the empty heads of the small, but loud crowd of birthers.

Especially those at Fox News. Remember Lou Dobbs, yep, he’s back. If the birther issue swirls around enough the Republican candidates will have to address it at some point in time which means they will run the risk of alienating some of their base. The flip side of that is being questioned by the vast majority of Americans who consider this a non issue. And the art of the deal from Trump’s perspective? He will not be there to answer those questions because he is not running for president. His gain is that he continues to make himself relevant in the national spotlight plus he keeps his enormous business empire growing and in the spotlight.

Donald Trump is almost a country unto himself. Best known for his vast real estate holdings and his casinos he also owns golf courses and hotels all over the world including a number of the Muslim countries. His latest criticism of Muslims was also part of his charade. He is in multi billion dollar business deals with many of them. In addition to real estate he has his hit television shows “The Apprentice”, “The Celebrity Apprentice”, and at least 3 other shows on the Golf Channel. There are numerous other business deals that Trump is involved in including lending his name and presence to a multi level marketing project called The Trump Network. In all likelihood it would take “The Donald” years to severe his ties to all of his business interests, which would be necessary, in order for him to run for President.

To be clear about this, I am not making a judgment about Donald Trump’s qualifications to be President. Only that the statements that he is making now are not consistent with who he has been in the past. He has, in the past, always been a highly civic minded person who cares deeply about this country. Perhaps enough to use his skills to help President Obama with a little big business two-step called “The Donald Game”

Very interesting. If that were his game, it would make him an altruistic soul.

I’m with you Bill. I cannot believe that Trump is this dumb. He has another agenda.

Mike, he has too many things going for him to saddle himself with the Presidency. Plus, I don’t think he would like to come down to the President’s level of living.

If he ever won high office, he would crown himself emperor. He is kinda likable, but he can be a jackass.

It’s amazing how, when tainted with ‘running for office’, a man throws all his old beliefs out of the window, as if they didn’t exist in a past that wasn’t true. Pretty soon his bid for the candidacy will be as bankrupt as his New Jersey Casino.
