When does this end? Now, Mitt Romney in a speech at the Americans for Prosperity dinner in Manchester, New Hampshire, the governor gets a little carried away with his rhetoric as he makes a suggestion that certainly will upset more than a few as it hails images from our dark racist past.
Here’s the story from The Atlantic:
I’ve just come from the Americans for Prosperity Republican cattle call in Manchester, New Hampshire, where, among other things, Mitt Romney made his debut as a 2012 presidential candidate. I’ll have more later. But the short version: didn’t go so well. Romney made the awkward suggestion to “hang” country’s misery around Obama’s neck–then caught himself, mid-gaffe, and tried to backpedal and emphasize that he meant it metaphorically, and then seemed to decide that he was already screwed and might as well preemptively try to blame the press. Here’s the clip:

This may have been a slip of the tongue but it was an unfortunate one for sure. I wonder what he really thinks?

Whew! Talk about a “boy is my face red” moment.
Clearly Romney didn’t mean “hang”–but as someone who occasionally presents in front of large groups of people, watching others stumble and then try to recover from an uncomfortable moment always makes for a good time.
Great vid–thanks for posting!

I don’t like this guy but we need to be careful about not going overboard. Haven’t we all used these kinds of metaphors?

Well said Leslie….Clearly he isn’t appertaining to hanging slaves or owt like that…he’s just saying stuff…don’t read into it what isn’t there or freedom of speech is undermined…
Let them be idiots in what they say but never stop them saying it eh?
Otherwise I’d have to shut up….er….oops…;-)

I’m sure Romney didn’t mean to refer back to America’s dark racist past, but that’s what was projected.

Holty!!!…Projected where and why????
Some guy clearly realises what he is saying in a ‘light hearted’ way may be misinterpreted and stumbles around cause he knows some will latch onto it and….
Oh for God’s (or the deity of your choices) sake!!!
Grow up!
Romney is unknown to me but he is clearly not making a racist comment…and there is no ‘projection’.
Political correctness is making a mockery of democracy…we have to stop now and allow people to ‘say what they think’.
Disagree with them…hate their views….consider them idiots…by all means, but…BUT…stop looking for ‘the bogeyman’ if he isn’t there eh?
