Liberals destroyed in Canadian election

Read Time:46 Second

In yesterdays Canadian General election, Conservatives swept to power, in the process crushing the Liberal Party with the New Democratic Party emerging as the main opposition.

Canada has a 308 seat Parliament, at the time of writing the projected seat distribution was as follows: (Previous number of seats in parenthesis)

CONSERVATIVES 167 (143)
NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY 102 (36)
LIBERAL PARTY 34 (77)
BLOC QUEBECOIS 4 (47)
GREEN PARTY 1 (0)

This will be the first time Conservative leader, Stephen Harper will lead a majority government, in two previous Parliaments he had to work with the Liberal Party, as they were the main opposition, in a coalition-style government.

According to these results, the Conservatives have won 54.22% of the seats with only 39.62% of the votes, one of the least legitimate majorities in Canadian history, according to Fair Vote Canada.

A motivating discussion is definitely worth comment. I believe that you ought
to write more about this topic, it may not be a taboo
subject but typically folks don’t speak about these issues.

To the next! Kind regards!!

Not only is their great prestige in winning the race, but the prize money is one of the more generous purses in North America, the
purse being $1,000,000. It is a top quality game, pure example of how every game should look like.
s and over time it became popular all across

Hi would you mind stating which blog platform
you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but
I’m having a difficult time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your layout seems different
then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S My apologies for being off-topic but I
had to ask!

Plus this one. Even though my politics tends to the more progressive side, I always read the Economist cover to cover each week.

I think they’re putting a more positive spin on the numbers than is warranted. The next quarter will tell the tale.

Ah yes….that Paul Krugman.

Well..there’s always one Paul Krugman wherever you look eh?…;-)

Our ‘inflation’ – as understood by ordinary folks – could be sorted in one swoop.

Illegal immigrants gone = money saved.

Non-working immigrants gone = money saved.

That’ll do…a few more billion in the bank.

Our country on the up….illegal immigrants screwed.

Do for me.

The Telegraph…mmmmm….quite

I’m ‘here’ old bean. The Telegraph is somewhere else.

The only newspapers of any worth in England are The Daily Mail and The Daily Express.

They print as much bullshit as any other papers but they occasionally print the truth.

The Sun is alright actually as it has a Page 3 girl…;-)

The Telegraph? The Independent?….oh dear…away with the fairies mate….they still think our Labour party are a sensible option…given the last decade or so they are clearly insane…

Whats a Paul Krugman by the way?

Hold hard young Michael!!! Cameron hasn’t given anyone a ‘double dip recession’…and I ain’t a Tory (Con), but fair does…

Our Socialist/Labour (Labor) Left leaning Government screwed us dry.

Bugger all to do with ‘our Conservatives’. They may be stupid but they hadn’t been in power for two decades – even I wouldn’t blame a Govt that hadn’t existed for 2 decades!!!

‘Our’ Republicams (Labor) are total tossers and deserve to be obliterated…end of.

‘Our Cons’ are not necessarily your Cons…they aren’t great by any means but anything is better then Labour (Labor)…they are bloody awful.

The French Secret Service call London ‘Londonistan’ ever since Britains Labour (Republicans) came to power.

I can be blamed for any number of things but even I can’t influence the French Secret Service!!!

I know absolutely nothing about Canadian politics.

Question.

Are Conservatives in Canada ‘right wing’ politically speaking (and is their ‘right wing’ relative to England’s right wing)??

If the answer is ‘Yes’ and ‘Yes’ then I am delighted (grow up Teeluck you are starting to sound like me which is definitely a worry)…;-)

If the answer is ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ then I have even less idea than I realised I had….

Help?

Canadian Conservatives are a mixed lot. Basically they are on the right but they range from former Prime Minster Joe Clark, a so called red Tory (somewhat to the left of Bill Clinton) to Preston Manning, the former leader of the reform party who would almost fit in with the moderate Republicans in the US. As to Stephen Harper, we really don’t know. He’s never governed outside of a minority government and it will depend upon what brakes his caucus will have on his possibly more radical policies.

I think given Stephen Harper’s druthers he would have followed the UK’s David Cameron lead and cut spending during this recession and given us, like the UK, a double dip recession.

Canadians will well remember that in the 1993 election the Conservatives were all but wiped out federally. The joke was they were down to one non breeding pair (Elsie Wayne and Jean Charest). They came back, merged with the Reform Party and now are the government. Most Canadians are centre of the road politically (far to the left in American politics but centre of the road say w.r.t. Europe) and a government here would be ill advised to depart from that policy.

I am actually not super disappointed with the election, I am not a conservative, but my father is an MP and just go re-elected this term by a landslide so I am proud of him. I am very happy that green party finally got a seat in there so we can see what they are made of, and the less of two evils (NDP) is the opposition. I really wish we could have got Harper out of there but what can you do, his time will come.

Only about 40% of Canadians voted for the Conservatives, a greater percentage voted Liberal and NDP combined. My riding got rid of the Liberal MP and elected a rookie NDP MP. Perhaps the only chance of returning a progressive government is to have the Liberals and NDP unite in some way.

Prime Minister Harper during his minoritry governments governed centre to centre right and therefore didn’t alienate many Canadians. It’s left to see what he’ll do with a majority.

Sounds like you guys are following in the footstep of the US. Is that a new phenomena?

It’s relatively new, in that we are really only seeing this change with the Conservative party – Stephen Harper is basically following the initial steps taken by Brian Mulroney. He’s completely shifted our foreign policy, is taking steps to eliminate gun registration, is buying a stock of useless fighter jets that are costing us billions upon billions… all of it is far too depressing.

But the short answer is yes, we are starting to shift to a more USA-like identity as a country, which (no offense to the States) is terrifying for a lot of Canadians, particularly those of us who still want to retain a strong Canadian identity like the one we had.

I’m a Brit and lived in Toronto in the late fifties. It was the same in those days. The government gave tax benefits to its people who invested in Canadian rather than American companies.

I gather there are proposals for a North American Alliance comprised of America, Canada and Mexico. Stay clear of it. The UK is now slaves to the European Union, which is costing us a fortune and has more or less taken away our sovereignty.

Who knew there were so many cuntservatives in Canada…oh well…
The question is will this mark the end of Canada? I don’t know if they are as stupid as American Cuntservatives.

This is more disturbing than it seems. I appears they are becoming more like the US. The centrist party (liberal) lost seats to both the right wing and left wing parties. They are losing their centrist sensibilties and also movig right at the same time.
